It's always been interesting to me the type of language (slang) that's used by inmates.  Here's a list I came across that is supposedly used in Illinois Prisons.  Do you have anymore to add: and translate?

I believe it's any kind of note. My guy talks about other guys sending "kites" to his cell by way of the gallery worker.

Well that little trivia quiz didn't last long....

Yes, Dancer, they are all shoes....The DOC issues canvas slip-ons in R and C.  J says they must throw their street shoes into a garbage can in R and C and they receive state-issued shoes.  They come in three colors....white, blue and black.   The white one's are the average sized shoes...Marsha Bradys....the blue are giant sized...Gilligans, they are blue with white soles and a dark stripe around the sole...

And of course, the littlest shoe sizes are Bruce Lees....black little ninja types.... :-D

He said the term is used by all the inmates...it's not just an institution thing........Cracks me up *(%$#

Well, in street slang a sawbuck is a ten-dollar bill...I don't know if it's got a different meaning in prison...

Not trying to offend anyone, but when I was locked up in Lincoln, the women who turned to other women for "companionship" were called bulldaggers ( I think that's how it's spelled).

And when asked about the "companions" they kept they would usually reply with "I'm just gay for the stay"

Doo Rag: An archaic term for cloth worn on the head of a prisoner. See "Wave Cap." (MI>

I don't think it's archaic!  It's a soft "rag"  or cloth put over your "do" as in hairdo ie  braids or cornrows to keep them neat.  It's very time consuming to braid hair.  Generally people like to tie the do rag on when they sleep so they don't come loose. You can buy them out of nylon fabric at sally's.

haha my fiance only talks in slang!!  I still have never heard the "DooDoo" one...kite is a letter and breaking bad means cheating or leaving.. i could go on for hours, but he talks like that outside of prison anyway.  It drives me nuts!!  I guess after a while I just start to catch on and he's younger and a lot of our mutual friends talk like that too.  Ahh.. I'm starting to understand it like a second language.

I"ve heard shortie refer to kids and also to girlfriends.  Freak can refer to girlfriend  as in "my freak is coming over " or is very sexual "she's a freak",  and verb "get your freak on".    I don't think it has quite the same meaning as "kinky".

Those certainly are colorful phrases.  Some of those sound English to me  like "storm and strife"  for wife. 
In IL,  I've never heard CO's referred to as snout, pigs, bulls  as on that list above from TX.  I've only heard  guards,  CO's and POlice,  white shirts for LTS,  sarge for sergeant.

Here's one that drives me nuts. It may be a Southern Illinois phrase, although the first time I heard it was from an inmate who's from Adams County. When they refer to a guy they're talking about as "Ol' Boy" or if it's a woman "Ol' Girl" as in, "Next thing I know, Ol' Boy was coming at me with a 2x4..."

Blanket party: Throwing a blanket over a despised prisoner, so he or she can't identify an attacker.
Bitch Up: Chicken out or be a coward. (FL)
Buck Rodgers Time: A parole date so far into the next century, the inmate cannot imagine release.
Bull Dagging: Homosexual activities between women; taking a homosexual partner. Also, "Bull Dagger," a macho-acting lesbian. See "Dagging."(TX)
Butched In: Having to perform oral sex for favors
Catch a Square: To get ready to fight, as "You'd better catch a square, punk." Derives from the corners in a boxing ring.
Catcher: Sexually passive or submissive, often victimized

Diaper sniper: Child molester.

I thought about one he told me a few times. He would refer to some other inmates as "Hallies" or say "He's Hallie". When asked what that means he would say something like his breath smells like he has "Halitosis" or something like that. I don't know if this is a prison term or not, but he's said it quite a few times.

I found the prison slang postings hilarious! Since this is my first experience with prisons in general and I don't know what half of the words mean. Fortunately, I have a brother in law that is a prison guard and he translates for me. When I visit my loved one and he starts using that slang, I give him a funny look and he says "I'm starting to sound like a convict aren't I?".

You honestly have to laugh about some of this stuff or you will go insane!

There are a few. Usually guys that had rank in their "orginization". There was one guy there who owned his own company that was a baller. Funny you bring that up. The guy I was referring to was the first person to give me a job in the telecom field. He was there for DUI/Death Involved. But none the less, he was a millionaire so he was a baller. The type of person who does not count his pennies when he make out his commissary slip every week.

19. Caught-my-case / caught-a-case – When the inmate was arrested
20. Celly – One’s bunkmate
21. Channel-check – Refers to changing the channel in dorm television rooms
22. Check-in – To admit one’s self into the hole or SHU for personal safety reasons, voluntarily or involuntarily
23. Chiefs – American Indian / Native American inmates
24. Chinos (Spanish) – Asian inmates
25. Chow – Go eat at the cafeteria
26. Chow hall – Cafeteria or dining hall
27. Compound – Refers to the yard
28. Cook – Inmate who cooks for one or more inmates in exchange for something of value
29. County – The county jail one was detained at while awaiting Federal Procedure
30. Crib – One’s bunk.
31. Day-room – Area inside range inmates are allowed to gather in
32. Diesel-Therapy – Term used to describe the transportation status of an inmate from one institution to another.
33. Discipline – Sanctioned placed on an inmate by other inmates by way of various restrictions to physical punishment
34. Dog - Gang member
35. Dorm – Housing facility containing 20+ inmates that all share common bathroom, kitchen, television rooms
36. Down / been-down – Amount of time the inmate has been incarcerated
37. Drive by – C.O. or other inmate walks by bed or cell, looking while passing
38. Driveway – Front of bunk or cell

39. Feds – Federal Bureau of Investigation or other federal agencies including the court
system (U.S. Attorney)
40. Foo’ – Inmate who says stupid things or performs stupid acts.
41. Getting-on-the-bus – Inmate who reduces their sentence by testifying against other inmates that are committing illegal offenses inside prison.

91. Store1 – An inmate who sells commissary within the dorms

93. Take it to the stall – Settling a dispute in the shower area in the restroom of the dorm by means of physical assault or fighting
94. Tank – Housing facility containing 10-12 inmates with a bathroom and day room
95. Ten (10) minute move – Relocating between locations that occur five minutes before the hour and last until five minutes after the hour
96. The man – Inmate who has connections to all areas
97. Time – Length of sentence
98. Violation – One who has violated probation
99. Whites – Anglo / Caucasian inmates
100. Work – Referring to tattoo(s) or body artwork
101. Writ Writer – Inmate who helps other inmates with their legal work.
102. Yard – The entire areas of the dorm buildings, the recreation area, the chow hall. Any place for inmates within the fence at an institution

"Bull Dagger."  Can mean two things. Where I used to work it meant a female offender who is gay but who is also very foreceful.  According to Liz it means females who engage in sexual activity; a/k/a "bull dagging."

When I was in Lincoln, the gym was the "Gay Bar". I was informed that the only women who went there was trying to pick up a  girl.

Mean muggin' - Making mean or antagonizing faces or gestures to someone
Government name - I heard this used by an undocumented inmate, the Government of Illinois thinks he has one name that he is charged under, but thats not his real name...
Weight pit - is the gym?
Man up - take sides before a fight
Get your money - I think all those "money" terms stem from "money-shot" in a porn movie. I wont say more.
Popped - busted or caught. ie., "The cop turned the corner and popped me right there!"
Stinger - Guys take an extension cord and paperclips and connect them and drop them into their cup of water to heat the water extra hot for noodles or coffee.
Wolf - When a guy is mad and pacing and swearing and yelling, usually right before a fight.
Blow your wig back - kill someone

And my favorites: Snow bunny or "Becky". There are not so many white younger women going to the County to visit, and the guys yell this out to me...I guess "Becky" is like a generic white girl name? It makes me laugh every time!

"HO Case"  In women's prisons, that is someone who is serving the minimum 61 days.  "She's a ho case."  Many times women convicted of prostitution get 1 year terms & end up with 61 days.

My wife mentioned a new one yesterday.  "You gettin' funny?"  If you act differently than your community is used to.  This most often applies, at her place to women who are getting out soon and start to withdraw.  Of course, gettin funny can lead to the "sh*tty shorts."
