Hi...I posted this in the thread about where our lo's are located, but maybe it was supposed to be posted here?

I'm hoping someone can give me a little bit of info. Nephew's 1st time in DOC--From R&C he was sent to Shawnee & had been there just a little over 2 weeks when he called last night to say he was being moved to Hardin work camp. I checked his doc page & his info has been updated to show he is indeed there today.
My question is..Is that unusual for him to be moved so soon???

My sister called and talked to a staff member at Shawnee & he told her that being moved to the work camp was a good thing--she said my nephew sounded happy about it when he called.  He's got no gang affiliation & is non violent, but does have a class x, so I'm just curious that if this is somewhat of a privilege..why they're extending it to him and so soon after his incarceration?

Can anyone give me any info on Hardin work camp or on work camps in general???(pardon my ignorance, but what's the differences between work camps and the prisons??)
Thanks for any answers you can give!

Hi MDL.  if he has a Class X, he probably will not get clearance to move outside  the work camp, it all depends on his conviction.  The guys at the work camps will do all the work in the event the prison is locked down, like cooking meals, etc. There is normally only a couple hundred guys at a time at the camps and at some of then throughout the state, the inmates go out into the community and work. Recently, they helped in the filling of sandbags for the floods in Southern, Illinois.

Hardin County  Work Camp - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. No visits admitted after 3:00 p.m. Visits limited to four hours in duration. Visits limited to six adults at once. Visits limited to eight per calendar month per offender.

Hardin County Work Camp (mailing address is Box 99, Route 1, Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, 62919)

We had a great visit...The drive there wasn't bad either, took us about 4 hours.  I was surprised by the appearance of the facility--It looked like a school with a small fence surrounding part of it--No barbed wire.  The officer met us at our car, shook it down & led us inside. We found the staff to be, for the most part, nice & polite.
We were also surprised by the visiting area(very small)--It's basically just in a hallway that they've blocked off & it holds only 2 tables.  We were there from 9-1 & only 1 other IM had a visitor while we were there.  There is just 1 snack machine with chips & candy and then 2 soft drink machines--20 oz. bottles for 40 cents!!! I don't think anything in the chip machine was over 70 cents.  I'd recommend that anyone going in the future, take a roll of quarters in, as the soda machine was jammed & wouldn't take dollar bills. Seemed to be a pretty relaxed atmosphere actually & several IM's were walking the track and playing basketball.  His spirits were pretty good & he knows that it's nothing short of a blessing that he is there--He considers himself very lucky..Is happy to be able to get outside and that he has a job to keep himself occupied.  We drove back the same day, but in the future might get a motel in nearby Harrisburg or even camp for a night or 2--saw many places in the area we could do that.
I feel much better after seeing him & knowing he's doing ok. wc18

Glad you got to see him and he was OK.. that 1st visit is the best and does wonders to rest our nerves.   Would they have left you visit two days in a row had you stayed?

Thank you for all the information you provided about Hardin and please share more as you learn more. Your posts will help the next family member with a loved one there.
