Has anyone ever heard of an inmate getting a furlough to be at the birth of their child? My fiance's lawyer told him yesterday that since he will be sent to a minimum security prison that he may be able to get him a furlough to be at the birth of our child in June (of course I don't believe much of anything that his lawyer has to say). Any thoughts?

I doubt it.  I'm almost sure they will grant furloughs to get to a funeral or for medical reasons but not for a birth.  It will be interesting to see if this happens so let us know.

The only furloughs I have heard of, are those for someone dying/or death and it is very expensive if you are even approved for one of these. I have never heard of anyone getting one for a birth. Good Luck though if this happens for you. Let us know...

I haven't heard of furlough's for birth reasons but some people are granted furloughs before being sent to prison.  I was granted such a request in 2000 but there was a stipulation that went with it.  I was granted a furlough for 5 days to get my child and personal things in order however if i did not return to the county jail they would add 10 years to my sentence.  If they do grant this request please keep us informed as I am curious to see what they have to say.

Thanks everyone for your responses. It didn't sound like this was a possibility. I haven't gotten my hopes up about it, but I guess it won't hurt to try. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I know my man got a furlough for the funeral of his mother. He didn't return from Furlough and got an additional charge for escape.I can't imagine going back to prison after seeing one of my children born.I know this is tough but if we were given to have done that again we'd skipped the funeral.
Added 3 years to our sentence.

I am suprised they granted a furlough for a funeral.  When my husbands dad passed away he was allowed to go to the funeral but was escorted by the CO's and was only allowed to be there 30 minutes then they took him back to the prison

Yes, we were told, IF he came in for the funeral, that he would be brought in by two CO's and he would only be able to view by himself, when none of us were there, but at no time would be out of site of the CO's., They then would take him back and we could not see him at all.

wow mah that is horrible. i dont get it you would think that having your loved ones there to console ya when you are coming from a horrible place anyways would be the right thing to do but idoc dont see it that way and sometimes i think what unjust is done to our loved ones should also be done to them.
