STOP THE KILLING IN THE ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

Our newly sworn in governor, Pat Quinn,  wasn't elected or chosen by anyone...he won his role by default...by the corruption of yet another Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich.   Although he's long been waiting in the wings ready to chomp on the governor's mansion at the first opportunity.  He defended Blago after his arrest for about a nanosecond, before throwing him under the bus.  He wanted this job...he wanted to be Illinois' governor and he claims he wants to clean up this state...make Illinois respectable again....clean up the corruption and expose the graft and dirty side of politics...I hope he has a pair of trunks and a cape...he's going to need it.

Quinn should start with the corruption and mismanagement of the Illinois Department of Corrections.  People are dying in the IDOC because of the lack of medical treatment.  Inmates aren't receiving quality, efficient medical care because of politics, greed and indifference.  If Quinn is serious he should investigate the suspicious deaths of Illinois inmates.  They are dropping like flies.  Another death was reported at Logan CC yesterday. 

A bid in the IDOC is a potential Death Sentence.  Inmates with minor convictions and short-term sentences aren't returning home to their loved ones.  They are dying because of the stupidity, laziness and penny-pinching of those responsible for their humane treatment while wards of the state of Illinois.

Following the recent suspicious death of inmate William Buhrmester, at Menard correctional center, Quinn's offices were flooded with telephone calls demanding an investigation of Dr. Adrian Feinerman, medical director/physician at Menard.  On probation for self-prescribing controlled substances to himself, Feinerman, also a licensed pharmacist, is rumored to be an owner in the company that holds the contract to supply the IDOC pharmacies with drugs.  Besides being the full time medical director at Menard, Feinerman maintains two private practice offices in the Chester area.  His services appear to be spread thin and inmates are dying because of his irresponsibility. 

Quinn's aides have been fully informed of the suspicious nature of Buhrmester's preventable death.  Quinn has yet to respond to the public outcry and request for the governor's intervention.  Feinerman's unprofessional behavior surrounding this death has been reported by the inmate's family.  Not only did he treat the Buhrmesters with rudeness and disrespect, but his handling of the body draws raised eyebrows.  A quick unapproved embalming was performed by the Randolph county coroner, an unlicensed embalmer, making an autospy nearly ineffective in determining the official cause of death. 

His apparent lack of medical care left William Buhrmester to die a horrid, agonizing death in his cell, unattended and apparently ignored by the prison staff.  What kind of monsters can stand by and watch a man die, begging for help and do nothing?  The entire staff of Menard, starting with Warden Donald Gaetz, should be investigated.  The warden had been informed of the seriousness of William's illness and his dire need of treatment...yet he did nothing. 

The IDOC's contracting of outside medical services has created a cesspool of greed and shoddy medical treatment for it's 45,000+ inmates.  Wexford Health Services has cut the quality of care within state prisons to reap huge profits.   They have drastically cut prison medical personnel since they took over in 2004.  Many of the state's prisons are lacking important health providers - doctors, psychiatrists, nurses and technicians.  Inmate health complaints aren't handled promptly and oftentimes are ignored until the illness is life-threatening.

There is no other department or issue in the state more important than saving lives.  This should be Quinn's priority.  He should step up to the plate and address the problems in the department of corrections.  The Director, Roger Walker has been MIA due to illness and for the most part has been an absentee director for much of his two-term administration.  He was appointed by Blago, undoubtedly as a political payoff, and hasn't done much of anything since taking over as Director.  He never responds to the public inquiries about medical abuses in the department.  According to a spokesperson in the governor's office Walker is about to be replaced as Director.

Former IDOC Director Donald Snyder is serving a two year sentence in Federal prison for taking a $50,000 kickback from the former medical services provider.  Citing this pattern of greed and corruption for the medical contracts in the IDOC, Quinn should put an investigation high on his priority list.

The Burhmester family is still waiting for a response from Governor Quinn.  Illinois Prison Talk is still waiting for a response from Governor Quinn.  All the families of Illinois inmates are waiting for a response.  These untimely, unnecessary and totally preventable deaths of our inmates is criminal.  Whose going to be accountable?  The Governor is ultimately responsible.  It's time for him to take action.   The alternative is to ask the Federal government to step in, once again, to make the officials of this State do the right thing.

Yes, this is an excellent article. It needs to be sent out to the governors office and whoever else we can send it to. I hope they take the time to read it. And as I said in the other thread, I agree with you about taking this to the federal government. It is a disgrace what is going on in our judicial system. And every American citizen should be outraged at it.

Wow. Is there no end to the corruption and incompetence in this state? Great editorial that has the ring of truth behind it. Murder is murder no matter who committed it or how. Be nice to spend a little effort convicting those in power who kill by corruption and indifference. I believe they're the worst. The article kinda scares me because someone very very special to me is in Dwight R & C. With a difficult pregnancy and recovering from double pneumonia. She'll be out in 6 months. I hope and pray. Can't talk to her or visit her for a while, I guess, so I write every day and send her stuff like suduko and books to keep her brain from rotting until they get her to general. I got her 1 postcard. They tell her she's staying in Dwight due the medical condition. I hope the folks there are a little more humanitarian than the monsters I just read about. Anybody got any scoop on Dwight? All I know about prison is being trapped on an assault carrier for months on end when I was in the Marines. This is no doubt very very different. I made her a lot of promises before she left. I intend to keep every last one so I don't wanna miss doing something I could or should be doing. Thanks very much.

Welcome to the forum.  The women in Dwight are treated slightly better but we've heard disturbing reports about there also.  There are a few threads about the medical care at Dwight, I believe, in the Inmate Health forum.  I know there was an issue there last year over fans for the inmates....the sweltering heat was almost unbearable for the women inside and it was difficult to get fans for them.  Hopefully the pregnancy will be handled properly.  Make sure you have your inmate sign a HIPAA form for you to get her medical information.

    Hello my name is Rose and I have a brother that is in Statesville  prison right now. My brother has stage 3 cancer and they made my brother sign a paper to release him from getting his med. When my brother first got to Statesville they locked him in a room for 6 days to detox him from is pain medication. My brother thought that he was going to die because he had gotten so sick. It was by the grace of GOD that my brother is still alive. I was just there today to see my brother and even though he looks good his cancer is eating him up inside. My brother is not getting the right treatment that he really needs.  His pain can get so bad at times that he can not sleep and the pain will bring him to his knees. My brother has Colin cancer and he has to poop in a bag, and they don't even give him a clean bag but once a day before I spoke to the Worden my brother was only getting a clean bag once a week. He was told to empty  it out and reuse it. Now my brother is still having to do the same the food that they give his runs right through him like water. So they are still telling my to dump it out and reuse the same bag.  I feel like the people in Statesville are heartless cold people that they all need to have GOD in there life.  I am trying to help my brother get transferred to Dixon ILL and there is where he can get the Medical help that he truly needs.  Asst. Worden Reed is nothing but a liar. He promised me that he was going to help me and all he did was put my brothers life om the line now. Mr. Reed called my brother out on the yard in front of the prisoners and was talking to him now they all call my brother a nark but he is not the Worden was talking to my brother about what was going on. Now I have to wonder if my big brother is even going to make it out of Statesville alive. If his cancer don't kill him is one of the other prisoners going to kill him because they think he a snitch.   If anyone has a solution for me please I am open to any help. Thank you. But this is not all my brother is going through. So please if anyone knows what I should do please, please tell me. I don't want my brother to die from the cancer nor by the hands of another. If the LORD wants him HE will take him on HIS time, not by mans time. This is from the loving heart of a sister. Please help.

daz this is very powerful. i have an email list the includes most legislators and another pretty large list and will send this to both.  I hope many IPTers will come to the hearing on May 19 we need to have a lot of people at the hearing and we need people to call legislators and the Governor about the terrible medical care in IDOC.

Rose - my heart goes out to you. My brother died after complications from an infection he got from his bag (my sister outlaw's doing - I call her my "out" law instead of "in" law) I'm not saying this to make your concern worse. My brother had beat the cancer itself for 2 years - he got an infection through the bag. My brother wasn't even incarcerated - this happened on the outside. So that bag needs to be changed more frequently than once a week. 

I wish I had a better solution that would calm your worries. I know that prayer is always available and faith in action can get you through troubled waters.

You are very right regarding him not being taken in man's time. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I hope you will be able to come to the committee hearing on the 19th or at least submit your story to the IPT administrator.

I am praying for your brother. I would suggest if you can't attend the meeting in Springfield write a letter for someone to read. I believe that this is finally our chance to be heard by someone other than IDOC. I wish I could attend the meeting but my son has an event going on that day.

Does anyone have Patrick Hess as a parole agent for their parolee?  Now or in the past.  I am trying to put together a petition for cruel and unusual punishment against him.  Jesse Montgomery's office is aware of this petition coming but I am looking for parolee's, and/or their family members or ex-parolees who can also confirm they recieved the same treatment.  My son was in Stateville and received negligent medical care and may have permanent damage which will result in a lifetime disability.  This could have all been prevented but Patrick Hess made sure he took him back 2 days before a doctor's appointment that my son already had approved movement for.  Long story but Patrick Hess is a horrible man and a disgrace to the state of Illinois.

I think it is District 3 out of Springfield.  His first PO was a great guy and if you have to have a PO his first one would be the one to have, he was all about rehabilitation, Patrick Hess is all about "brow beating" his parolees.  He has no respect for woman and actually has a "mail order bride".  He practices his religious rituals at home visits.  What happened to the separation of church & state?  He told my son and he is not worthy of rehabilitation, the kid is just barely 21.

My advice is to get an attorney. You can try to file something against him, and by all means do. You should seek retribution for the damages against your son.

It is very, very wrong for him to tell you son he is not worthy of reform. I think Kathleen Zellner and Associates handles injustice cases.

The problem with petitions and greivances is that they are usually ignored. I hope others will also come forward who have had the same experience.

Dazzler....I want to be more involved in prison reform.  I am all about standing up for what I believe in.  There are too many people being warehoused to prison when there are alternative solutions....Can you give me any ideas of more ways I can help?  

Also do you know anything about a person being on a parole hold because of a new charge but now the charge has been dismissed and they still won't lift the parole hold even tho his parole was over with on April 27th.  We aren't talking a violent criminal here either.  The prisoner review board told me today that he has to go from the county jail back to IDOC and I probably won't see him until August because the docket is full for June and July is filling quickly.  Even if they took his good time away.....he has already served every bit of that and more in the county jail awaiting a trial for a flippin' misdeameanor case.  And they wonder why IL is going broke when they waste funds to house people that have basically served all their time.  UNBELIEVABLE!  I contacted Jason Garnett but he couldn't give me an answer of why they were going to take him even tho the charges that put the hold on him were dismissed and he was aquitted.  Any ideas?

Thank you HisGirl....I appreciate your empathy.  I have been tracking the untimely death of Mr. Buhrmester....I even tried to e-mail his dad and it came back to me.  It outraged me and I am tired of the State of Illinois stomping all over us.  Just because a person is in prison does not mean that they deserve less than adequate health care.  A HUMAN life is a HUMAN life regardless of their background.  Don't get me wrong I am not one of these mother's that is in denial of anything....yes, my son had a role in his situation but society looks at offenders in such a way I feel as if it is discrimination and it starts within the walls of the prison.  I hope Mr. Buhrmester's family receives justice.
