Hi! My LO was in R&C for 4 weeks. It was very hard for us to not have any communication, except one letter from him and I mailed him letters every day. Being able to see and touch him now during visits makes everything much better. But it was a long 4 weeks, however I was told if I thought it was hard for me it was ten times worse for him. Let me know if you have any other Graham questions and I will try to help. Coxy girl

Most people wait until they are transferred to their parent institution to send money but Graham does let them shop commissary. I sent money to my husband while in Graham but just enough for personal products and envelopes because when they transfer to their parent place it will take IDOC weeks to get their money caught up with them after they move.

Lightning... The next commissary day for Graham receiving is January 8th, they only have commissary once a month.. my L/O is also there in receiving he has been there for 6 weeks...they can spend 15.00 for personal items & whiteouts...they can also buy some warmer clothes (long johns).. my L/O said it is really cold...and he also said if they see the dentist or the nurse they have a $2 copay. Hang in there receiving has really been hard for me I haven't been able to see or talk to my L/O for 7 weeks, this site has been wonderful and everyone is always willing to help with any questions you may have. They say it gets easier after receiving.. I can only pray it does. God Bless,Terri

I am somewhat confused, sorry for the questions. My l/o is in Graham R&C. I have tried to read as much as possible on here but I am only confusing myself more, there is so much to learn. Here's my question (I am sure there will be more to come): Are the inmates in Graham Receiving allowed to purchase write-outs (meaning should I go ahead and put a small amount of money on his books) or is he only allowed the one write-out while he is in there? Are they allowed to write us while in there or do they have to wait to get to their parent institution? Again, I am sorry if this is posted clearly somewhere but I keep seeing different posts and I am not sure which one is correct.

While in Graham they are allowed 1 commissary shop a month to buy write outs and personal items. They can write while there but I would suggest only putting a small amount of money on his books while in Graham because when he moves it could take weeks for that money to catch up to him.
I sent my husband $40.00 while in Graham and when he moved I sent him what he would need so that money could be put on his books at his parent institution. It took 3 weeks for his money to be moved from his account at Graham to Lawrence when he was moved. It took about the same amount of time for it to be moved again when he transferred to Big Muddy.

I have been there more times than I care to mention. Things will get more bearable and less confusing down the road.

I have a friend that was transported to Graham on 1/22 and he is still classified as in reception. My boyfriend was also transported on 1/22 and he is classified as in custody......does this mean he is in population???

I would assume Graham is your bf's parent facility, which is why he is listed as "In Custody," while your friend must have been sent to Graham's R&C and is awaiting transfer to his parent facility.

Is Graham R & C still taking 3 to 6 weeks? Does anyone know? I am going crazy and it's only been 12 days! I guess it being Valentine's Day with the weather cold and gloomy, I am missing my fiance more than ever... the end seems sooooo far away

My guy was in R&C at Graham from October 16th-Dec22. Be prepared for a long wait... I'm not trying to scare you because it may be faster now... This was the case for another member as well. :( It stinks. But write him EVERYDAY and he will be able to write you as well. You can also send greeting cards and paperback books. :) Hang in there, it will get easier, trust me.

The length of time in receiving depends on what facility they are being assigned to. If there is an empty bed, they'll be transferred much faster.

I visited Graham weekly for almost six months. R&C is certainly the most difficult because everything is an unknown, but it does get better. If your loved one stays at Graham, you will at least be treated respectfully when you visit and it is among the better facilities. We have been home for two years now, but the knots I get in my stomach are still the same when I think of what he and I have been through. You are in my prayers and be confident that time does pass more quickly once you get to visit for the first time.

The Recieving at Graham has been a lengthy process... the mail to them is very slow.... they get big mail faster than letters...you can send up to 5 paperback books/magazines & or puzzle books I also enclosed a letter when i sent him books. They get those in about 3-5 days compared to up to 3 weeks on a letter. Welcome to IPT
