In the past week I have gotten back three letters that I sent to my Fiancee that said on the envelope "For Postage Sender:Remove Label, Affix Postage and Remail" with a finger pointing to the Return Address. Does anyone know why this could be happening. I am putting his correct address, and Inmate Number, and I haven't done anything any different than usual. I also don't use a label on the envelope, so this is very frustrating to me, because it already takes him 2-3 weeks to receive my mail, and now this is causing even more problems. Any advise will be so helpful!

Is the correct amount of postage on the envelope when you mail it?

I would recommend sending it from the post office to make sure the postage is correct I had that happened once. And never again since. If your checking to make sure his info is correct and his id number is correct it has to be a postage issue i'm guessing. Hope the issue is resolved fast.

Yes postage has been fine; a 2 page letter with 4 small pictures, a 3 page letter and a standard size greeting card with a Forever Stamp

You have to really pay attention to the weight of the card used. Some of the newer cards are the exact weight allowed. Any time I send cards, pictures etc. with a letter I get it weighed and have had to pay 20 cents extra more than once. I finally picked up a letter scale at a garage sale so now I have to check at post office to see the official weight of the 44 cent stamp.

Does the mail room have nothing better to do with their time that they weigh postage in a prison mail room?  You would think if the postage was incorrect the post office would catch that before the mail is even sent to the receiving address.  That is what the post office does if you mail a letter from home to someone in the free world.  The mail never even makes it there, with the post office taking it back to the sender without mailing it until postage is correct.  In my own opinion I think someone in the mail room at the facility just doesn't want to deliver mail.  I have always sent greeting cards and up to a 6 page letter with 1 stamp with no problems.

Weird. You say you don't use a return address label? I would call the mailroom and inquire.

Yeah, go to the post office counter and ask them about this... A similr thing happened to me last winter. I got 5 pieces of mail sent back saying the adress didnt exist!!! So i went up to the lady at the P.O counter and asked her abut it. She said it was odd and i had to put the mail in new envelopes and re send it all again because they totally wrote on top of the adress with ink >:/.. I was soooooo ******** but crap like this does happen

I really hope the mail rooms don't waste the time weighing envelopes like lvansr2 mentioned.  If there was a "finger" pointing to the return address that sounds like something the post office did not the facility mail room, although one can never be too sure when it comes to the IDOC.  When in doubt, I always take the time and have what I am mailing weighed inside the post office.  (I'm too cheap to buy my own scale...)

Letters
Weight Not Over     Price
1 ounce                 $0.44
2 ounces                $0.64
3 ounces                $0.84
3.5 ounces             $1.04

I had a letter returned once because I put just my last name in the return address instead of writing out my full name. It was marked unable to identify sender.

I took it that the Post Office marked the letter, For Postage. And I only paid 50 cents for the scale & I have done some ebay selling so I use it quite a bit.

You said the finger was pointing to the return address, IDOC is very picky. Are you putting your full name and address as the return address? I know that they will send it back if all your information is not in the return address area.

Hi All!!

Thanks for all of the responses, yes, I have put my full info in the return address, I am thinking as most of you all are indicating that it's an issue with postage, so I guess just to be sure I will put two stamps on everything...Grrrrr!!

anything at all over 1 ounce is charged extra..

say it is 1.05 ounce..you have to pay extra for that .05 ...

even if it is 1.01 you still have to pay extra ..it is rediculous now..but i hope this helps..

I think just to wasting time and your stamps you should just go up and ket one of the cashiers at the desk inside the post office weigh the letters for you and they will tell you exactly how much postage you need, this is what i do and it's really better then guessing how many stamps you should put on the letters.

Good luck hopefully this helps you
