My son is at Stateville R & C and I was wondering if someone can tell me about the conditions there? Is there any ac? Do they have access to a tv and news? How many people are in a cell? I have seen the pictures but wonder what it is like there since I have not been able to talk to him. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

R&C is the toughest part of the IDOC journey. Most of that is mental, having to adjust to the reality of prison, and not having contact with the outside world. The IDOC purposely does that to reaffirm that they are no longer free men. They spend most of their time in their cells, and are not in contact with stateville's general population.

Welcome to IPT!
There is no AC in R&C and no TV and news.. Writing him is the best and sending him in some books/magazines, helps him to pass the time. He maybe there for up to 30 days until a bed opens up at the prison they are going to send him.
He may get a phone call out, nothing promised and get his hands on a write out to be able to write you, but you can write him now, which you should and let him know you are OK and that you found a place for a lot of information. It will help him to know you are OK!

I have been writting him almost every day. I did get a letter from him but there was not much in there about where he is and what it is like. It is so hot right now I hope is he staying cool. When he was in county he froze and he did mention in his letter that it is not cold there. I will make sure to tell him about whats going on in the world when I write him. I really appreciate the information. My connections here have been a big help for me to know what to do to help him. Thank you for being here for all of us!

Mine told me not to write anymore letters because he hasn't got any of them. I send him one everyday even magazines etc... He told me to save my money because they are at least 3 weeks behind getting their mail. Mail room is overwhelmed from the overcrowd's and they will probably be gone before they get the letters. I will continue to write just in case he might get one.

My husband is awaiting transfer to R & C at Statesville and is suppose to be moved tomorrow the 27 of july. He was on parole and was suppose to have completed in 7-22-11. 3 days before on the 19th he was arrested for domestic battery. He was I bonded on that charge and DOC put a parole hold on him. His PO transported him to Danville Sunday and he is awaiting transfer tomorrow. My question is, will he remain in R & C until his hearing? I call the prisoner review board yesterday and was told that the docket had already been closed out for August and he would see the September board. His parole officer said he will probably be a turnaround. I am hoping he doesn't have to stay in R & C the entire time awaiting the hearing as he won't be able to shop, have phone calls, or visits. Please advise--thanks

Welcome to IPT leighanns520 ... your husband could indeed stay in R&C at Stateville, or he could be moved to another prison to be able to see the PRB sooner, there is no telling right now what IDOC is going to do. As you know, the overcrowding issue is a big problem and no one knows if or when these guys are moved.
You might want to wait till he gets to Stateville and is there for a few days and then call his counselor and ask your questions. They may have more information for you once he is in the system again.

Since the timeframe for when he will see the PRB is so mysterious and vague, and it is possible he maybe transferred to another facility to see the PRB - I have a question about visit & phone lists. Will he even be given the option to do visit/phone lists? If he ends up having to stay 4+ weeks in R & C (as some have indicated) is it ever possible for them to make calls or have visits?
I think he might be feeling hopeful about a being at stateville NRC for only a short time. But since you have all said it could be longer - I am just wondering if he is given the option to do lists, if I should tell him to do so.
I will see him 1 more time at DuP. Co before he is transferred and just trying to think of any last bits of info to share. Please advise.

Anyone in R&C who is there for a parole violation already has a pin # and they are usually allowed to make phone calls sooner than a new inmate. If he is in R&C more than 60 days waiting his hearing, he is then allowed visits.

Hi Our situation is so similar. My husband had 3 days left of parole and was charged for domestic battery. The court I bonded him and his PO came and picked him up and took him to IDOC. Yes the board can see him if he is till in R & C. I was told by Statesville my husband would stay there until his hearing. He was scheduled to see them 9-7. Last Friday they moved him to Pontiac and now he has to wait until 9-13 to see them. S. domestic charge may get dismissed but as of right now it hasn't. I was told it does not matter if it is dropped or if it is a conviction parole could likely be revoked. They have really took a stand on domestic battery violations. If he was getting off in January and he was doing a 50% sentence then he would only have to do 2 or so months. He would come out with no more obligation to the state. If I am wrong on what I have said, I am sure someone else could answer. Good Luck!!!!!

I finally got a letter from my LO who is in R&C at Stateville. He said they have only given him one t-shirt and one pair of boxers that he has to wash them out in the sink in his room because they won't give him an extra set. This is unsanitary. In the 14 days he has been there, he has showered and shaved once, and they ran out of razors last Saturday, so no one has shaved this week. Is our state so broke they can't give an inmate 2 pairs of underpants? Gov. Quinn has got to start letting some of these guys out to relieve the overcrowding. Obviously, we cannot afford to incarcerate so many people. I am beginning to wonder if there is money to be made by keeping these men behind bars. I know that they make money from commissary and the JPay and Consolidated Telephone companies are ripping off the families of these inmates. Surely there must be some kickback to the politicians for them to let this continue. This is sickening.

Hello Glad you got a letter. It is bad there for sure. My husband still has the only pair of undies that they gave him at Statesville R & C. Pontiac has not given him any so he is still washing by hand and this week he got a non compliance ticket as he had washed them and hanging them to dry. Guess that is against the law too. But so should providing one pair of undies. He has not been able to shop as computers were down and now they are blaming it on inventory. They are also saying due to inventory he can't get any drawers either. Excuses is all you will get from IDOC. My husband has not been able to shave as they are not provided razors. Once a month he can drop a barber slip and they do it, or if he could shop he could purchase clippers. He is almost out of soap and no shopping. He asked for state soap and they said he had to file an indegent slip-Spelling is wrong. Anyways they denied as he has money. how are they suppose to purchase soap if they cant shop. I told him jokingly-have the entire unit not shower for few day and it wouldn't be long till they got soap. The co that sits in the day room wouldn;t want to smell 100 stinking me. HAHA. It is a mess though. I hope your loved one doesn't have to be in R & C long. S had very little movement is R & C but now has 6 hours of movement a day. He is locked up 18 hours in a two man cell. No tv as Im not buying one he should come home when the board meets--we hope. his celly does not have one and the dayroom does not have one. What a mess--good luck. Send books, my husband read a lot and he is not a reader but it passed time

I am new to this site and still trying to find answers to my thousands of questions that run through my head daily since my LO has been in R&C. But the one i can not seem to find is my LO wears contacts and he wears the ones that he has to change weekly and he has not been able to change them and they have not issued him glasses either. When I called and asked if I could send him his contacts they told me no they would issue glasses but still have not even got his eyes checked. He is getting really worried cause his eyes are starting to burn and dry out cause they have not been changed in over a month. What can I do? Or what should I do.
By the way this site is wonderful and you are all wonderful and full of information. Thank you for letting me be apart of this site it helps me a lot and makes me feel a little more at ease. Thanks again!!!!

Hi I was at Lincoln and they would not let me have my contacts. There was another girl there that wore he contacts in without them knowing and after a couple of months she got a very bad infection from having the same throw away contacts in. He may not see an eye doctor until he gets to his parent prison. That is the way it was with me in the womens prison. There was a 3 wk wait once I was transferred from intake. Then another 2 weeks for the glasses to come in. I am not sure, but you could call R & C and see if you can mail glasses in from home. I do know they have to be prescription glasses. My family mailed in an old pair of mine and they held me over until I could get my prison issued ones. I would think the mens prison would be similar to the womens rules however the wait to see the eye dr may be longer as there are more men in the prisons than women. I do wish you luck. Hope he gets to take care of this issue soon
