My husband is my life, best friend and soulmate

I have a question. I heard (through my husband before he left for his sentence) that there are cases in which if a loved one is sent to a facility which is far from the home where he resides; if it is a hardship on the family member to travel long distances, a request can be made to have him sent to the nearest facility to where the family member lives. Is this true????
As in our case. It is really just me an my husband. I have disabilities that limit me to travel far whether I am driving or a passenger. If he gets sent someplace that is far. I will not be able to travel the distance (even if someone else drives) due to my health to see him and that would not be fair to us.
Does anyone know?? Thanks

They sometimes can be relocated, but once an inmate gets to his parent prison, it takes 6 months to a year before they can put in for a transfer. He might need to tell them this in R&C and see what his chances would be.

He was told (when he was in county) that if I had a letter from a doctor stating the hardship and I send it up high on the chain of command at IDOC (cant remember who he said), that they HAVE to move him closer. Of course we know how rumors can be. That is why I am checking this out. When his sentence was handed down he was told he it would be minimum security (he is in on driving offenses). Is this something I should be working on in case? I see my doctor Friday

Unfortunately inmates are not always placed in the correct security level prison, my hubby wasn't, due to bed space. It really sucks to have to drive 5 hours to go see him and I feel they located him to a place that punishes everyone. I hope your LO get placed somewhere close to you but i wouldn't count on it.

All he/you can do is try with the letter and him telling them when he goes through receiving the situation and see what they will do. Just remember with IDOC there are no guarantees, so I would not get your hopes up to the point where you/he are so let down if nothing happens.
IDOC is severely overcrowded and no one knows where anyone will be placed at this point.
I wish you both the best in this matter.

Thanks Forevermah, I think he has his hopes up more than i do. From what I hear, its hard to say what IDOC will do. You are right IDOC is so overcrowded thats why it stinks the MGT is not coming back. Not sure what he is doing on his part (since I cant talk to him). But I guess Im gonna try with the letter. It cant hurt??? At least I know I did what I could to try and make this easier on both of us. Thanks so much again!!!!

Have you called and talked to his counselor, write down all the questions you have including this one and call, he/she might be able to give you some advice.

Call Stateville (815) 727-3607 and ask to speak to your husband's counselor. Give them his # and Name and if the counselor is available, they will connect you.
Be sure you have all the questions written down before you call and they will answer what they can, maybe not all.

Camswife, I know someone who was able to get their loved one moved closer to them because of health issues, I would just call springfield explain your sitauion and see what they recommend that you do. to try and get him closer to you I pray it all works out and like everyone said ildoc is so unpredictable and they usually just place people where they have space but I hope and pray they are able to help you/him. Have an awesome day.

Is Dixon CC close enough for your travels, because I'm thinking with the mental services that is where they would want to send him and they have you telling them he needs the mental help. I'm not saying they will but if....is Dixon close enough?

Yes - Dixon is very, very close to me. It would be ideal. However, it is ME, not him with the health issues. He is fine. Im the one with all the issues, Brain tumor, post stroke, etc. But thanks for the advice, jdmlt.

Yes, again I had to re-read postings. I got two different postings in my head at the same time. Multi-tasking doesn't work for me anymore I see...LOL I do hope you can get this accomplished.

Yes, his atty said he should qualify because he is less than 2 years and only in on traffic offenses. If he could get to Dixon it would be perfect for me (us). But I not gonna get my hopes up cause of how the IDOC works. But gonna try the suggestions ive gotten. thanks

Thank you Forevermah.....I called and spoke with my husbands counselor today (very nice woman). She answered my questions as best she could. She said I could send in the paperwork from my doctor to be considered , BUT there are NO guarantees (which i know). It would have to be reviewed, then go from there. It is a start. So, I will get what I need from my doctor on Friday. Our atty said she would send a letter to go along with it. Again, thank you (and everyone else who responded) for your help and info. You are a Godsend. I'm alone and don't even have anyone to talk to. So this has been a lifeline to me. Bless you all!
