I was under the impression that work release and work camp was basically the same thing but apparently it is not!?  I was talking to my bf who is currently located in Robinson but he had heard from another inmate that he may be able to go to a work camp.  So he wants me to check into it.  What exactly is the difference between the two and what are the qualifications for work camp?  Any information that you could provide woul be great because I'm lost.

You are right work camps and work release are two different things.  There are only a few prisons that have work camps.

This is from the IDOC website under Level 7 Low Minimum Security and it lists all the work camps.

LEVEL SEVEN [7]
DESCRIPTION - LOW MINIMUM SECURITY
Clayton Work Camp
Dixon Springs Impact Incarceration Program
DuQuoin Impact Incarceration Program
East Moline Work Camp 1
East Moline Work Camp 2
Greene City Work Camp
Hardin City Work Camp
Kankakee Minimum-Security Unit
Pittsfield Work Camp
Southwestern Illinois Work Camp
Springfield Work Camp
Stateville Minimum-Security Unit
Tamms Minimum-Security Unit
Vandalia Work Camp

If you go to our board for ATC's you will get a list of all the Work Release centers in Illinois and you can do some research.

There is a pretty big difference between work camp and work release. Work camps are Level 7 facilities, and work release is Level 8. At work camp, you are still in prison, wearing your blues and behind a fence ( except at Tamms WC where there is no fence). You can make a little more money at WC, maybe 35-45 dollars a month and you will be in 20 man dorm rooms. Work release means you are at an Adult Transition Center (ATC) where you have your street clothes, have a real job in the community, and are able to spend some time out in the world by yourself going to restaurants and shopping. And after a certain time at an ATC you can take weekend passes to go home.

Hardin Work camp is not fenced.

Thank you all for a quick response to the question.  I'm sorry that it took so long to reply but I haven't had access to a computer.  Now I've got to research more lol.

If a person is accepted into a work release program they are moved to an ATC aren't they? Does the inmate have any say as to where they are sent?

No. With IDOC, the inmate does not have a say. They can request a certain place but it is not always honored.

I answered your question in the other topic about Green County work camp. He will do six months inside, 1/2 of a years sentence is 6 months and then he will have to do parole.   Please don't keep posting this in both topics. It gets too confusing.

Hi and welcome to IPT ... IDOC just published new information on some of their work camps and East Moline was one of them.  If you go to this link on our site you can see the information and on that page is the link to the IDOC website (same information).

Well my son in Vienna Correctional Center has tried for work release last june or july and got denied from Springfield and Vienna approved it. So this year he put in for work Camp about 5 weeks ago and has not heard anything. He sent several letters to Springfield with a appeal and never heard back. Now he hasn't heard from Vienna or Springfield on work camp. He has been told that you can only apply for work release one time and same for work camp. I don't understand any of it. The Correctional officers pick on the prisoners and that is not right either. I am not sure they have done much on the mice, roaches and birds in the prison. I sure wish that the Good times come back. He has another 1year to go after august of this year. I want him closer to me. It is a 4 hour drive one way for me. Something is not right and no one in the system seems to care. They are short handed on Correction officers down there. It is hard on family and friends

wc30     wildgranny ... It will All Be OK.  Unfortunately that is just how the State handles things. My LO applied just like your son and got Denied as well. Then after several months of writting Letters/ Calling Officials he Got the Work Camp. He did 2 Contracts and now has just transferred to another location for more classes. He also was denied the transfer 6 months prior, reapplied then just got approved. We are very fortunate the transfer even happened.

Keep your chin up and we will keep praying for you, and it will all work out eventually.

Welcome to IPT.. He has to apply when he is two years short on his sentence.  He puts the paperwork in and most times they are approved by the prison, but then the paperwork goes to Springfield and it's up to them to decide.

Nothing you can do, but know that because of the overcrowding, many guys are being rejected, there are only so many beds in the work release and more inmates that want to go to them.

We have a board on all the ATC's here on IPT, this is the link:

No, there is no good time, it was cancelled in 2010.  If they are in on a 50% conviction, they get day for day credit and if they are eligible for programs/classes, they may be able to earn some extra days.
