No, they banned smoking in all IDOC prisons in Illinois about 2 years ago.

This is great for people who don't smoke, they don't have to breath all that poison.
And even so, the second thing my husband will do after his release is ask for a cigarette after 2 years of no smoking....

As hard as it will be on my loved one, quitting smoking is something he has wanted to do for a long time.  Can something GOOD actually come out of this nightmare?  Let's just hope it sticks once he is out.  Thanks for the info.

That's because that 2nd thing goes so well after that 1st thing he asks for!   wc1

The employee's smoke like crazy. They can't smoke inside the buildings but they do smoke on the grounds. Tamms recently built 2 smoking pavilions for guards/wardens while they have zero money to fix anything. The guards in the Supermax will go into the empty cell blocks to smoke(the Supermax is half full)Guards on road crew detail will smoke in the vans, even though they are no allowed too. There's plenty on smoking going on in prison, it's just not by the inmates.

Quit smoking is not easy, as some people think, your body craves it like other drugs. Nicotine is a legal drug with any one believe it or not. People are people, the guards are people as well. Do we all make a complete stop at a stop sign? Do we are stay with in the speed limit? Do we always tell the truth about everything? So they will break rule as well, most dont complain until it effect them.

I'm one of those smokers, who feels regret every time i light one up.. but, still can't seem to quit lol.. my LO stopped smoking about 7 years ago (before the smoking ban), so, of course he encourages me to stop.  I get the letters with autopsy pictures that say "smoking will kill you," and have even received a letter where he's said "You know, I have some boot strings i can send you.  I hear they work pretty well as a suicide device.  Then you can just do it quickly, instead of dragging it out with every puff."  He was soo proud when i stopped for a month, but, unfortunately i started back.  I know he's only trying to look out for my health (as are everyone who wants smoking banned everywhere), but, i think what people don't realize is... the more you pressure someone to stop, the harder it is for them to do it.  Eventually every smoker stops.  Unfortunately, it took my dads open heart surgery to make him stop, but most don't wait that long.

I have found in this half a century, plus that i have been a live that we can make any excuse we choose to do what we want. Doing this time was not even our choice and it is hard but we are doing it. I have been on both side of the line. I truly understand about smoking. I remember when a family member was in a drug rehab program and the spouse came home and found them OD and the counselor came to the house and ask them some question and that family member told the counselor you dont understand and he told them garbage ( this is a very nicer version) you can do anything you put your mind to. He also told them that something that small and heroin you LET control. It was an eye opener for me after I heard it. You are with the addiction but your love one is doing the time..... I am glad you dad made it thru his health concerns, mine wasn't so fortunate 10 years 1month and 7day 15hours since my mom has been gone. 8 years 10months since my Mom has been gone, and the people that loved them tried in every way to encourage, beat it in them but the said the same thing. But the did what they wanted and now we are unhappy... You truly don't have to quit, but something will stop you with out a doubt. Think about with every pack you buy if you saved it what you and your l/o could do.... well off my soap box it is wet. I not feeling well.

Yes, the prisons allow the staff to smoke outside.  They hide their smokes in the electrical box outside at a couple of the prisons.  I know of one prison where the staff has to walk beyond the gate to smoke. But it is still on the state grounds within the gates at some of them.  And it is near the housing units so the inmates can smell it.

I've seen the sheriffs smoke in the lock up in the county, and then they wonder how inmates gets stuff in the cells.

I am so thankful that the inmates can not smoke, because kissing my husband now is like a dream come true.  He smoked 2 packs a day to cold turkey.  He says he doesn't even crave cigarettes and more.  And yes the guards smoke all over the prisons, he said he can smell it sometimes.

Rottie.. me and my LO aren't in a relationship..it's confusing to pretty much everyone i talk to because i do call him my LO..  he's my boyfriends brother, but, i love him as if he were my own brother, and would continue to help him in any way i can, even if the relationship with his brother faultered.. basically his whole family has walked away throughout the years, so myself and my mother adopted him into our family.. so he is a loved one..

my father passed in 2001 from multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer).  He smoked for 40 years, but it was heredity that got him instead of the cigarettes in the end.  And yes, i know.. excuses are like ***holes, everyones got one, and most of em stink.  I (and everyone else who smokes) just need to retrain our willpower.. instead of thinking "i can do anything i want to, and you can't stop me no matter how many times you tell me to quit," we need to think "i can kick this habit and prove myself wrong, i CAN do it."  Take a hairdryer to that soap box, girl.. and i hope you're feeling better soon  wc30
