Quinn Says He's Not Concerned About Poor Approval Rating

Springfield, IL -- Governor Quinn's approval ratings are down but he says he's not concerned by the numbers. "There was an approval election about a year ago, and I had about the same number and I won the election, and I think that's the only approval that works in a democracy", said Quinn.
Quinn is rounding out the first year of his first full term but he strayed away from some of his campaign promises on issues including state income tax and the death penalty. He's had ongoing battles with the unions over broken promises and unemployment in the state is nearing ten percent. "Fox Chicago We Ask America" reveals about 30-percent of registered voters approve of the job Quinn is doing.

Chicago - Eleven months after they gave Pat Quinn a full, four-year term as governor, Illinois voters are deeply unhappy with his job performance; fewer than 30 percent approve of how he’s doing.
A FOX Chicago News/We Ask America survey found only 29.6 percent of registered voters approved Quinn’s job performance; 60 percent disapproved.
Even the governor’s own party appears to be deserting him. Among self-described Democrats: 46%percent approved, 42 percent disapproved.
Illinois was already facing financial crisis when then-Lieutenant Gov. Quinn took office in 2009 following the arrest and impeachment of Rod Blagojevich. While Quinn campaigned in 2010 on the need to raise the Illinois income tax, he promised to veto any increase larger than one percentage point. In January, 2011, Quinn signed a law raising the personal income tax rate from 3 to 5 percent. At the time, Illinois’s jobless rate was declining. Since then, unemployment has jumped dramatically to 9.9 percent, compared to the national average of 9.1.
Fewer than half of voters in the Governor’s home town of Chicago are happy: 49 percent approve, 39 percent disapprove. In suburban Cook County, 32 percent approve, 57 percent disapprove. In the suburban collar counties surrounding Chicago, 27 percent approve, 61 percent disapprove. Among registered voters Downstate, a mere 19 percent approve, 70 percent disapprove.
African-American registered voters are Quinn’s strongest supporters, with 52 percent approving while 40 percent disapprove. Among Hispanic voters, 30 percent approve, 54 [ercemt disapprove. Among white voters, 25 percent approve, 63 percent disapprove.
There is little difference between male and female voters. Among women, 31 percent approve, 55 percent disapprove. Among men, 29 percent approve, 65 percent disapprove.
We Ask America conducted the automated telephone survey Wednesday, Sept. 28. It included responses from 1,815 people registered to vote in Illinois. It is accurate to within plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. (That means any result could be either 2.3 percentage points higher or 2.3 percentage points lower.)
