Hi, everyone!  Could anyone tell me what happens when an inmate first arrives at Taylorville--do they have to spend a certain amount of time in an orientation setting, or do they go straight to their bed/dorm?? My LO just got to T'ville a couple days ago, and I   was wondering what the procedures were.....Thanks in advance, very much, for any info!! He is so young, and I worry soooo much about him!! He hasn't been able to call me yet, either. I am hoping for a call   very soon!! I got my consolidated account set up and ready!! I'm trying to learn some things so that maybe I can help him with some words of advice!! Thank you everyone, for being here and helping!!

Hello - As for arriving at Taylorville, they do go through a orientation program and then they are assigned to their house.  I cannot remember how long exactly but from what I remember it was about a week or so maybe a bit longer.  They can call as soon as they have their pin # as your number was approved and you have an account with Consolidated.  I know when my L/O arrived at Taylorville he already had his pin # because he talked with his attorney when he was at Statesville, but of the guys did not.  It took them about a week to get theirs. Taylorville is not a bad place.  There are six houses (dorm style) so he will be assigned to a house once he goes through orientation.  I happen to be going for a visit this week.. I am in NH so it is a  while between visits.  The CO's seem OK and some are even friendly towards the visitors.    Hi i hope this helped a bit.

Yes, they do go through orientation, but it's not long. Firsst they are placed into "receiving" house (where all new inmates come) before Taylorville figures out where to put them. Some people spend 2-3 weeks in "receiving" house... my husband spent 4 months there. Don't know why, but he hated it because most of the people were comming and going.... He was transfered to Taylorville on Tuesday, and on Sunday I already got to visit him. Somebody's LO called me and let me know that his list was approved. So I got a visit before I got a phone call  wc7
Hope you get you call and visit soon either!!!

New at this prison stuff.  My son was transferred to Taylorville a week ago.  What is orientation, and any info regarding college classes?  Thanks!

The "orientation" period is common when arriving at most prisons, even if the inmate has been in the system for a while. Basically, it is a week or two during which the idividuals facilities go over their specific rules and decide where, within their walls, the inmate fits best.

All classes within the prison system have a long waiting list as there are limited spaces and much demand. Have your love one get on the waiting list!

Hi Rottie. My loved one is at Jacksonville, which as far as I can tell is quite similar to Taylorville. I also know someone who was recently released from Taylorville after 2+ years (No everyone I know isn't/hasn't  been in prison - LOL) I have visited at Taylorville and it was pretty nice. If not too many are visiting at a time, you can have a 5 hour visit. The inmate is allowed to move around in the visitation room (not so at J'vlle). The CO's I encountered were pleasant. They live in a dorm style room 10 bunk beds to a room (20 guys). They are more strict on some things than J'vlle and more lenient on others. I don't know what your son is in for, but they do have a substance abuse program there which could help him earn some good time. Getting to Taylorville isn't too hard, you would probably go done 55 South from Chicago to Rte 29. It's about a 3 to 3-1/2 hour ride from Joliet.  wc30
