I have a weird question.  If I go visit my l/o can I bring a money order to him and have the facility deposit into his commissary account?  How soon are those funds available?  I was just thinking since I know I'm going to visit him and I want to send him money rather than paying JPay like I normally do I wanted to just bring a money order.  Thanks!

At BMR, we are NOT allowed to bring in money orders. They must be mailed.

I don't believe you can bring money orders on visits, but what I used to do, is mail a money order to him from the post office closest to the prison when we used to visit and it was received the next day and he used to have the money in his account within a day or so.

Even when I mailed it from home, it only took a couple days for him to get it and soon after that the money was added to his account.  You just have to think a few days ahead, at least you save all those extra $$'s spent for jpay/western union!

I tried the mailing the m.o. from the closest town while on a visit and it did save a day or two. At BMR, it takes between 6-10 days from mailing for it to be credited.

No prison will accept a money order on a visit.

When I sent a money order about almost 2 years ago to Stateville, he did not even have it after 3 weeks. So I used Western Union, which is expensive. And now, since they also have been working with Jpay, I send money via Jpay and that is really fast that he gets it this way.

I do usually use JPay but since I was going for a visit I thought it would be easier (and cheaper)!  I also know that at SWICC they are closing down commissary the week of Thanksgiving so I was just trying to get my hubby his money ASAP without all of the additional expenses.  Thanks everyone!
