Hello! Does anyone know what the steps to get my LO's license reinstated? He had it taken away a few years ago for DUI's... not sure if he can even ever have it back, but hoping someone could help shed some light on the steps to try and get it back, and is that something that can be started while he is in IDOC or would we need to wait until he comes home?

I would contact the Dept of Motor Vehicles and ask them what the procedure is.  A driver's license is a privledge, not a right.  A friend of mine had a DUI two years ago and had to attend a series of therapy type classes and check in with a court appointed clerk once a month for close to a year.  After that, he needed to hire an attorney to petition the DMV to reinstate his license.

I helped one of my son's friends get his back...I had to write a letter as one of his witnesses that he no longer drank alcohol.  They need several letters from people in the community, ie, a minister/priest, teacher, etc...

It's a very long process, evaluation, classes, and a formal hearing...and lots of proof that the petitioner is no longer drinking...

It's everything that Dazz and Steadfast said. A tedious process and so many hoops to jump through and can very expensive. The DMV is your first step. He'll need to be out to go to the DMV in person to start the process but you can get the dates/times the hearing officer is available from the DMV. In Sangamon and Macon Counties, they aren't at the DMV everyday. When hubby tried to start the process in Sangamon County a few years back, you had to just show up and take a number. They wouldn't let him make an appointment. It was first come/first served there so you could end up waiting to see the hearing officer for a long time if people are there ahead of you if they do it that way in your county.

wc71-1 One of the responses is right you need to go to the DMV and they will let you know what you have to do to get the license reinstated. My husband is in Logan right now because of the same thing, when all he had to go is go to the DMV and pay the reinstatement fee and go through all of the classes . It is really not worth doing time over if you just do what is necessary. It's better to go in person since each case might be a little different. Good Luck!
