Does anyone know of any by mail correspondence schools that my LO can work on while in IDOC? He has been hearing rumors about Ohio University, but I couldn't find anything online. We would really like for him to have something to do other than watch TV, and as we all know, IDOC is offering less and less due to budgets!

You can do a simple web search for all of the various correspondance schools out there. Here are two things to think about though, before enrolling with one of them. They can be outrageously expensive, especially since very few of them are accredited schools. The other thing is that some of the programs involve materials that may not be allowed within the DOC.

Definitely do your reasearch before you shell out any money!

My son, not in anyway connected to IDOC, took a correspondence course through BYU Independent Study (Brigham Young University) while in high school.  He needed an extra high school course for college entrance.  I found them to be very helpful, not too much money, and highly accredited.  However, to receive high school or collge credit, a final exam must be taken and proctored by a limited list of individuals--not sure if a IDOC counsler would qualify or have the time.  (Luckily, a high school teacher friend of mine was eligible.)  However, they do offer limited courses for personal enrichment, no test needed because no credit is received.
