My son, who is at Pittsfield Work Camp, is due to get out in Aug of 2013.  After his release he is wanting to attend a school, but the price of this school is beyond my capability.  I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any grants/student assistance programs etc. in which a parolee would be able to qualify for??? He wants to go to this school so as to learn this trade so that he can start his own business and not have to be subjected to the prejudice that most employers have toward parolees.  Can anyone help me with this please?  Thank you!

He can try a WIA grant. I don't know the county you live in but most counties have a site that will serve the community. It doesn't matter if he is an inmate, he will have to go through the same process as anyone without a background. If you in the cook county suburbs, it is quite a few locations you can go to. If you need the addresses and who to ask for let me no. I also have the information for the ones in the city as well. If he gets out in may he will get out right when new funding is made available. Normally, at the beginning of the fiscal year, which starts in July for the State and the City of Chicago!

Thank you for your reply!  A  WIA grant???? I will check on the county level to see if here in Sangamon County they offer this - hopefully they do!  In the meantime, could you go ahead and send me the info on this - I certainly would appreciate it!  And, once again, I appreciate you replying!  Thank you!

I also think it would be a good idea for you to get an appointment at the facility he wants to attend, and talk to someone directly about what they have available in the way of scholarships and grants, tuition assistance.  They might have programs for low-income people or other benefits available.  If talking to them face-to-face, you are more likely to get a good level of help in understanding what potential assistance is available.

To Nemdf - I have already talked to them about assistance, and unfortunately, it is up to the students to secure their financing - they don't have any help.  They have given me a list of places where previous students have gotten assistance and it goes from the VA all the way to private companies. Unfortunately, my son would not qualify for VA due only to his age when he gets out.  But I thank you for replying.
To Skully - I'll be sure to post it if I ever get through it - remarkedly, it gives me something to do and sort of makes the time go faster. Good luck in your pursuit, and if you find something out before I due, I would appreciate it if you would post it also.

http://www.illinoisworknet.com/vos_portal/WIA_Works/en/Home/

This is sangamon counties website which provides WIA grants and job service information; he would have to contact them on the day and time they have orientation. You can hopefully go directly to site from this link. It is a co op of counties that provide this service for your county! If you need anymore info let me know,
