Photos are 2 for $7.00.

You are allowed to hold hands when you are sitting at the table together and you can  hug and kiss when you leave.
Lockers cost $. 50.  Call to check on current ID requirements.  There have been changes at some prisons about SS cards.

There are random car checks.  Make sure you don't have any knives or other contraband in the vehicle. No baseball bats,  or even unopened liquor is  allowed.

Kids are not allwoed to run around and have to be fairly quiet or they ask you to leave.
All visitors must be checked in no later than 4pm, or have obtained prior permission from the facility's administration.

There are just 6 visits a month allowed and two weekend visits .  Friday is no longer considered a weekend day.

Does anybody have any experience with this institution?  Visiting facility, education, CO attitude, inmate behavior, frequency of Lockdowns...anything and everything.  I did look it up on IDOC, but I am looking for "inside" (read: truthful) information.  I could not find anything on the IPT forums.  Thanks

My man hasn't been in Danville for a decade but while there had earned priveledges and was well treated by the staff. The yard used to be grass and concrete and visitation even allowed picnicing and lying on the grass. They had held a "family picnic" once a year with sports competitions. I hope things are still as well. Sorry I don't have any current info except what is over 3 years old and listed on the official ILDOC website under "facilities".

My man put in for Danville and is now being sent to Shawnee. I now must drive even further than 5 hours...Shawnee is a 6 hour drive for a 4 hour visit. We have gone from visiting 30 hours a month to 20 and the drive is longer.

Thanks for the info!  Any feedback helps.  It would be wonderful if they still used the outside patio and the like for visits.  I can't imagine IDOC allowing family picnics!  Soory to hear that your guy did not get the transfer he wants.  I hope it works out for you.  I know the travel time can be so physically and emotionally draining, but I know your guy appreciates all your efforts to come see him and show him support.  Best of luck to you both!  Thanks.

In a good place in my life now with Kinny

« Reply #5 on: August 03, 2006, 08:47:20 PM »

My husband is at Danville and has been there for about 3 years now. It is a very comfortable place to visit. They use to take pictures but someone messed that up about 3 weeks ago. They have courses and the inmates can get jobs. They have yard and phone privilages. My husband has a key to his own room. the co's there to me are allright, as allright can be in some peoples eyes. the visits are nice, the visiting room has a big window that looks outside, so you do get a nice look out the window, when your mind starts to wonder. once you go visit you feel weird the first time but after a while you get use to the visits. as long as you go and have one thing on your mind and that is visting your loved one, then you will be fine. I have been dealing with the IDOC for 10 yrs come 10/30, and i have come to realize if you just obey their rules and don't have attitudes, like for instance if the waiting room is full and you have not seats or if you come right when it's change of shifts and you just keep you feelings to yourself and not express them in hostile ways then you will be fine. some may not agree with me on this but what ever i do i feel reflects on my husband. And i don't want them to take out on him anything i do that may cause him any problems. it's not hard i do like to express my feelings but i just hold it all in until i see my husband or when i am driving home and i vent by either crying or letting out a good scream on the road. well i hope this information helps the drive from Chicago is about 2 hrs, it all depends on how you drive. plz if you have anymore questions please let me know

take care

Thanks Cherokee!  I agree with you about keeping a positive attitude- both for yourself and your inmate.  I am not known in my "normal" life for being shy about expressing an opinion, but when I am on a visit, or on the phone with IDOC, I try very hard to remain polite and passive at all times.

Danville does not sound too bad.  What a shame about the pictures!  Hopefully they will let you have that back.  If my son does move to Danville, I will let you know.  At the moment, we are still trying to figure out if and when he can move, and where he would be allowed to go.  I will keep my eye out for your name on the Boards, and of course let you know if we will both be visiting at Danville!

Thanks for your reply.  I wish you and your husband all the best.

?>?>?> and welcome to the Danville family. My husband likes Danville, the visit are comfortable and there is alot of movement when they are not on lock down which is not very often. Only when someone acts stupid. They can go to school and get a job if their are available. He will like it there as long as he stays straight and just wants to do his time. But he is lucky to have you and I am sure you will keep him straight.

Prices have gone up on the food at Danville, a sandwich went from $2.50 to $4.00. The card that is being used now cost $5.00. The machine taking pictures was not working these last few weeks so they were taking the money out of the inmates accounts. It's so crazy how stuff has gone up. Tony said the Commissary prices have gone up to. I use to put $20.00 on the card to feed us both, now I am sure that is going to double because the pictures cost 2 for $7.50. Looks like my second job came in handy because on pay check alone with pay for visit and money on his books which I am not complaining about, but for those who like me are still on a tight budget, it just makes it hard. We pay for phone calls and now to feed our loved ones those that decide these prices must think we have or make a lot of money. But this will not stop any of us from visiting or getting phone calls or for sending money, it will just not be a easy as it was before but we will survive.   &*&

Well sorry to burst your bubble they haven't had a family picnic in nearly three years, the patio is not for use anymore and they put up a wooded fence to block the view of the patio. I wonder who changed all the policies in the last 3 or 4 years. Also the price of the vending machines cards went up to $5.00 at the first of December last year and we had to purchase this card, and then now I see the card will have $2.00 left on it. So now the card really only cost $3.00 they didn't even post a sign about the change. And now I see they have changed the time for the weekday visits it's now 12:00p.m. and not 10:00a.m. they change there policies at a drop of a hat.

I need to know how long the visit is.  On visit what is the dollar amount that you are allowed to have.  How are the CO's there? What are you allowed to do on visit (ex. play cards, dominoes) What is their policy, are you locked down so many hours and out so many.  Anything else you can help me with I would greatly appreciate it.

The visits can be upto 4 hours unless they get busy and then you might get bumped down to 2 hours.  A debit card costs 5 dollars and it must be a 5 dollar bill.  You can have a max of 50 bucks on the card.  The CO's are like everywhere... luck of the drawl.  I've not had any problems with any of them myself.  Some of the female COs are pretty picky about clothes.  I would recomend you stay way from white tops.  If they can see any hint of a bra you could get turned away.  Last week a lady had to leave and get a new shirt because you could see the outline of the bra.  Think material up top is a safe bet.  They have many games available.  Dominoes, Chutes and Ladders, and cards for certain.  I don't think they are locked down except for at night.  It might depend on the wing... I dont know.  That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge prison wise.  I hope is helps a bit.

Got some intell on Danville I'd like to share.  I saw my dad last saturday.  He told me that starting either this weekend or early next week, Danville is going on a 21/3 shedual like Big Muddy.  Inmates will be locked in the cells 21 hours per day and only let out 3 hours per day.  Unlike Big Muddy however, your lunch time will take away from your 3 hours "out of cell" time.  Big Muddy had lunchs shedualed outside the free time window.  Danville ofcourse is too lazy to do that.  The good thing is my dad will only have about 3 days to deal with this.  Has anybody else heard anything about this?

As far as she is your natural daughter and not YOUR step, she can visit. If she is a step, you will need a notarized authorization letter from custodial parent. Hope this helps.

My boyfriend just got transferred to Danville Correctional Center. I wanted to know if anyone could share any information with me about this place. Maybe visiting information and stuff. Anything at all would be extremely helpful! Can i bring our daughter with me to see him?? Thank you.

My son was at Danville and the staff and visiting facility was good....but that was before it went on the new lockdown status.....It was easy to get too.......they have lockers for visitors to use for belongings....you take in just your visiting card and locker key.......back then the vending machines there were much cheaper than at Logan where my son is now, but then again the prices probably went up at all of them......make sure your shorts are bermuda length; I've seen them refuse people due to length of shorts....they went to the store and bought something else then got in....but for the most part as far as IDOC facilities it was as good as it gets....also my son had very little trouble with CO's there...hope it helps...good luck.....griz.

My boyfriend just got transferred to Danville Correctional Center. I wanted to know if anyone could share any information with me about this place. Maybe visiting information and stuff. Anything at all would be extremely helpful! Can i bring our daughter with me to see him?? Thank you.

My husband is in Danville.  I have been there four times visiting him.  The first time, I came with our two sons.  They wanted two pieces of ID for me, my driver's license and social security worked.  For the boys, I didn't need any type of id...they are 2 and 4.  The first time, it took about an hour and a half from the time we got there till we got to the visiting room due to the paperwork, and their lack of being organized.

The food cards cost $5, and it must be a $5 bill.  The food card has $2 on it when you purchase it, so you can put up to $50 more on it.  I've heard the limit was $50, but I've had slightly over $52 on it.

They have small lockers for belongings only.  The lockers cost $0.50 that you don't get back.  I always bring four quarters in the event I have to reopen the locker.  From the place you get searched to the visiting room, there is a small area that you have to walk outside.  If it is raining, you will get wet.

Once in the room, they assign you a table.  The inmates have a designated seat at the table, and they are not to get up once they have sat down.  Your seat has to be across the table from them unless you have another adult with you to fill that spot.  If you have children, they seat you toward the back.  They do have some toys for children like candyland, but not much really, and the children have to stay in their seats.  They absolutely cannot leave the table without you.  How I try to deal with this is I always take one of my boys with me when I go up to the machines just to help them not get so antsy.  This does get difficult, and I have figured out that a visit with our children is pretty much tending to the children to keep them content.  A couple of the female guards have been quite understanding, but none of the male guards with regard to the behavior of children not being able to sit still.  I did have one female guard that was the pits to deal with regarding the boys.  Both my husband, and myself would rather visit without the children, but they also need to see their daddy, so...  I do get to visit in August without the boys so my husband and I can actually have a visit!

There are two pop machines, two cold-food (sandwiches or the like) machines, one coffee machine, two microwaves, and very limited condiments.  When I go with the boys, we spend about $30.  They will allow you to bring in a sippie cup if it is clear for your child if you don't want to watch for spills.  The only drinks are pop or water or juice.  I've been there when there was nothing diet so I was forced to have the boys get sugared up.

If you or your inmate has to go to the bathroom during the visit, you need to notify the guard as soon as possible because they take their sweet time coming to take you to the bathroom.  You will be searched again after using the facilities, and the inmate is searched (full body search for them) prior to using the bathroom.

Depending on the guard, you might have to always have your child with you when you leave the table.  This includes going to the machines or the restrooms.  This is really a bummer when you have more than one child.  I've only had one guard adhere to not leaving children with the inmate.  Also, the sign states that children must be accompanied by adults when leaving the table, or you will be asked to leave...but some of the guards expect them to remain in their seat properly.  My 2-year-old likes to sit under the table when he is tired, and according to the sign, he isn't breaking the rules, but depending on the guard is what will happen.

As I said, I'm going to visit in August, so if you have any questions you want me to find out the answers to, let me know.  I hope this was helpful.

They have two different times they are out of their cells.  One is for an hour and a half, and one is for an hour and 15 minutes....IDOC says it is 3 hours total....I guess they can't add either.

Each week, they rotate the schedule.  I'm not sure of the times.

There are no pictures.

If there is any other information I may be able to help you with, let me know.  My H has been in Danville for over a year.

wc13 If he already has his diploma (and I'm not sure that is a prereq) then there are also classes to learn a skill, such as auto mechanic, furnace repair, and the like.  I don't know a lot regarding the jobs at Danville because my H needs to get his GED and learn a skill so he can support his family, and that is the way he is focusing.  Again, I am uninformed about any other types of classes as my H does not need rehab, or anything besides going for his GED.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful in this area.  wc14

Anyone have any recently updated information about Danville?  What are the times when inmates can most likely have access to the phones? How soon can we begin visiting after they are transfered? Are they still allowing 6 visits per month? How long are visits on the weekends and do they usually become overcrowded and you are asked to leave early?

My l/o times are 8-9:15 and 6:30-8 one week and the next is 12:30-2 and 8-9:15 the next for dayroom which is when they can make phone calls.  I have gone on weekends and have never had my visit cut short but it does state that if over crowding occurs your visit will be cut short.  They are allowed 2 weekend visits a month and 4 through the week with the total being 6. Visits are 4 hrs.  Monday-Friday 8-6 and weekends are 8-8.

Sorry one more thing my l/o visitor list was approved 1 day after he got there and I went 3 days later, he had not been moved to general population but was still allowed visits as soon as the list was approved.  Now his was approved quick I am not sure that everyone's is approved that soon.  It took over 3 weeks for his phone list to be approved though.

How did you find out his visits were approved so quick since he couldn't call?  My lo's phone list was put in while he was in reception and he has a pin. Should he be able to call right away?  Have you stayed over to visit? What's a good hotel? What sort of ID do I need to visit? I have a 2 year old, is his SS card enough for ID? Thank you so much!

My husband got his pin number while he was in receiving also. He was able to call as soon as he was allowed to use a phone at his parent prison so your lo should be able to do that as well. You will need to give them your drvier's license or state ID for your first visit and many times they ask for a second ID like a SS card or a bill in your name. Only one of the ID's has to have your picture on it. I"m not sure about ID's for infants. I believe the infant just needs to be on his visiting list and you should call the prison to find out if they need your child's birth certificate sent ahead of time so they have it on file. I don't know the answers to the other questions. Hang on and someone else will be along.

He wrote me as soon as he found out so I guess it would have been about 4 days before I got up there to see him I was thinking it was 3. I visited him 2 times before he was able to call me though.

When I was reading about Danville, I noticed it said they have a receiving unit there.  Does that mean that my LO has to go through another receiving process before he can get visits and phone calls or will he put straight into population once he arrives upon transfer?

When an inmate is transferred to his parent prison, they go through a short orientation period to get them familiar with the rules and such. It's not receiving in the sense of Stateville or Graham. Just part of the routine.

They are allowed visits when they are in receiving at Danville, that is why I got to see my l/o so quick, he wasn't moved to general population for a few weeks after he got there.  So you are on the home stretch just wait for the list to be approved and then you should be good to go.  I am not sure why my l/o phone list took 3 weeks to get approved, he had been in before and his grandma was on the previous list and her number had not been changed so he was able to call her while he was waiting on the others on the phone list to be approved, so I believe that if you have a similar situation he can call but she was the only number that was already approved from before so the only person he could call.  The rest of us had to wait.  This part is very hard but at least you are over the receiving part at Stateville or Graham becaue that was hell!

Some places will flat out tell you no, they can't tell you, he has to tell you himself. Other places will tell you if a list has been approved, though they will not tell you who is on the list, even if you're asking if it's you specifically on the list. They will tell you that he has to tell you himself. If you call, the worst that can happen is that they tell you no.

Thank you!  I just got a call from him and he says he is putting in his visiting list today and has heard that approval is usually pretty quick.  It would be awesome if he heard back tomorrow so I could head up there this weekend.

Hello, my husband has been transferred to Danville, and I wanted to get some updated information as far as visitation, rules and regulations to look out for, if we can even hold hands, kiss before and after the visit, how long the visits consist of, how many can visit at one time, just information so that I know what to expect when I go visit for the first time and learn my way around,  etc.  wc38

Mrs G, visiting at Danville is pretty much the same as every other level 3,  they do stick to the rules,  I have seen groups of larger than 3 visitors visiting but never had that many so i do not know if approval was gotten ahead of time.  They are sticklers about having the correct address on your ID, and you will need 2 forms of ID for your first visit even if you have visited another facility before.   Visits are 4 hours, in a year and half I have never had a visit cut short due.  you can hold hands and kiss at the begining and end of your visit.  All in all it isnt bad for visiting.

I didn't reply about how picky they are. I think they are pretty reasonable, my daughter always colors pictures and they have never been sent back.  When I send him something off the internet I usually copy the article on a word document and print off, I make sure that the website is not on there and have not had any problems, photos I have only had problems one time when I decided to send him some of me in lingerie and you could see through it around the breast area they sent that back but nothing else has ever been returned to me.  I have always cropped my pics if there is anything that can be considered contraband for example beer signs etc... best wishes!
