Hello all!

Can anyone tell me about the conditions at Vandalia? My husband heard it's really strict there. He also heard they don't allow any electronics or hot pots... is that true? He has a year left and has thought about putting in for a transfer, but I guess he'd either go to East Moline or Vandalia. We know East Moline is cool, but it would be just his luck to get sent to Vandalia and if it's bad, that would suck. If anyone has info, please let me know.

Thanks!  ././/

Just some info. I picked up on my visit here. Feel free to PM me if you need further assistance.

Besides the visiting hours already listed, M-F allows 5 hour visits & W/E & holidays are only 3 hours. They will only guarantee 1 hour if it's busy, but can accomodate about 35 inmate visits in the visiting room.

Lockers are $.50, you can only bring in ID, vending card & car door key or locker key. No restriction on how much jewelry you can wear, only heard a comment that may be a past issue for some females that bras must be worn on females, underwire is allowed.

Vending card & machine is from debitek I think it said, cards have a magnetic strip & I tried a card from another CC with a chip on it & didn't work, so if you had another 1 with the old strip you could try & see if it might work. To buy a card it takes $1, max on card is $30.
No metal detector to go through, pat down search with coat on if you're wearing one, nothing in your pockets, remove your shoes.

I saw one table with 4 adult visitors, so not sure how many they allow max.

Kid friendly: no ID or birth certificate required - not certain of age they would require school ID or something, alot of toys, games & playing cards provided, I saw a baby carrier allowed in, heard powdered formula in a baggie with 1 bottle is allowed, 2 diapers - no wipes.

Vending machines, not positive of all expenses, but this will give you an idea & I stuffed us both in 6 hours over 2 days with about $40: coffee items $.40-.75, soda & juices $1, think all sandwich foods were $3.50, gum, candy & chips $.75 -$1.25

Layout: Prison is 1 mile north of 70 on the right, very close to the road. Visitor parking to the right of gatehouse. As you walk out the gatehouse door in the weather, you are on the grounds with no fences protecting you from the inmates that can be about 100 yards from you walking in groups of military formation from 1 building to the next or individulas without escorts on their way somewhere. The buidings are in horshoe formation with visiting building right behind & left of the gatehouse. Kinda old brick spanish style like the alamo all ground level 1 story high are the majority of buidings.
Visiting building: think 2 double wide trailers put together, guard desk at front door, you give him slip they issued you at gatehouse & he assigns you a table. Visitor & inmate bathrooms are up there as well as the toy section. Aproximately 30 round tables & plastic lawn chairs are moveable line the walls, with main aisle down the middle, table #'s are up on the wall, plaque on table indicates inmates have to sit in the aisle seat. Half way through the building is the vending machine section, water fountain & a guards stoop to watch the back half of the room.

Contact: Inmates enter through the back of the building & have to walk up to the front to check in, you're allowed to hug & kiss on entry & exit, touch hands/arms above the tables, hold hands walking up the aisle to the vending machine & I got a few pecks at the vending machine.

overnight options: Days Inn motel 618-283-4400 ($58), Travelodge 618-283-1922 ($59) these 2 are right off the Vandalia exit, I stayed at Days Inn it was updated & clean, Travelodge & some other little motel looked scary to me. Ramada 618-283-1922 ($66) Holiday Inn express ($84) - these were off beaten path & closer to next exit so I didn't see them, H.I. has indoor pool & is smoke free.

Lots of restaurant choices near exit as well as an IGA & Aldi grocery store.

I should point out Vandalia has 2 exits, the prison is the 1st exit (Rte. 51) coming from Effingham going 70 west, turn right or north at the exit. I noticed there is also a campground 2 exits prior to Vandalia also coming from Effingham, didn't write the name or town down sorry.

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeease N E 1 HELP ME!!!  wc23 My baby just got transferred to Vandalia today. Can N E 1 give me some info about this place? How long will it be before we can start back talking on the phone, when I will be able to visit him? How are the visits? Do they get more freedom. He just came from IL River and he was on lockdown for 21hrs a day and he wasn't able to move around in the visiting room either. Also do N E 1 have a direct address to this place so I can get directions.

While I don't know the particulars of  your loved one's transfer...generally, my experience has been that the transferee will experience the same thing that a new inmate may experience during intake.  Everything being equal, it should be no time that he will attempt in contacting you.

Your loved on is in the lowest security - that is FABULOUS NEWS:

No doubt, he will be in your embrace very soon.

Omaria, we have our prison profile here with information on Vandalia:

http://www.illinoisprisontalk.com/index.php/topic,7248.0.html

Vandalia is a minimum security prison, which is going to be a change for the better for him from Illinois River, which is one step under a maximum security.  I know we have members with loved ones there, one that comes to mind is WAID, you might want to search out more of her posts, I know she's talked about Vandalia here before.

Vandalia is off of Rt 75, east of St. Louis, I am sure if you did map quest from where are are located, it will take you right there.

Best to you and him.

Hello there!

I am so excited because I finally took the drive to go see my fiance' on Saturday who was recently transfered to Vandalia. I enjoyed our visit as always. It is far more different from IL River. More freedom, we got to sit close to each other and I like the fact he can go to the vending machine with me. We were like a real couple picking out our food together (So Cute)! Now that his time is getting low, he wants to see me a little more often. I don't mind, but money is a little tight for me right now. I am trying to get home situated for us and plus he needs clothes. He knows I am willing to make a way to see him because of the love we share. I would like to go back on the 16th to visit him. I just don't get enough of this man and am so anxious for him to get home to me.

Mrs. Ziemer

That will be fine, when I went to c my Boobie I had my D/L and birth certificate but you should be fine with those other items. The drive is a mess though, but you get used to it. I usually play my music and think happy thoughts about him. Sometimes I get ther in about 3.5 hours.

I don't think so, but I would call before you go.  They are normally very strict about proper attire during visits.

You definately want to call on that cause they're pretty lenient on some things, kind of depends on the guards really. Long as it isn't sex, drug or weaponish, has sleeves & longer than knees to cover most of you up including cleavage, I'd try it. Just bring extra clothes.

I'm going Nov. 8th for the weekend with another inmate spouse if anyone is interested in carpooling & staying in a hotel overnight, from SW Chicago burbs send me an email.

I have the question about MapQuest, too. My husband just got to Vandalia yesterday so I don't think I can visit yet but i want to be prepared.. MapQuest won't let me get directions to the Correctional Ctr. I got directions to Vandalia the city but I couldn't even see the prison on that map at all. It's a 3hr drive it looks like. I don't drive on the highway much or cross state so I'm anxious to find out how I'm going to be doing this.

If you are coming from the north. It is straight down I-57 to Hwy 51.  At the exit. Turn right.  Go approximately 2 miles.  The prison is on your right.

I'd suggest avoiding going down Rte.51 as it's a 2 lane road. Coming from the north to stay on the highway 57 south in Effingham, take 70 west. Vandalia has 2 exits, the prison is the 1st exit (Rte. 51), take a right at the exit, it's about 1.5 miles north & on the right side.

I am interested in hearing from anyone with information on the
WORK CAMP @ Vandalia

I don't know to much about work camps.  We had a member a long time ago that was in a work camp somewhere by Peoria, and I remember hearing they stayed in a hotel, and got freedom, and weekend visits to home.

If anyone has any information on how the Work Camp in Vandalia operates please post back.
THANKS

I am hoping someone can give me some information.  I am trying to find out about visiting at Vandalia.  Does anyone know if there is a certain number of days you can visit per month?  I dont want to use up all my days too quick for the month.  Some people say you can visit as much as you want others say only 5 days a week.  Does anyone know the real answer?

Nat,
I am not sure how it works in Illinois but I remember some things we used to do to move around this system. We could sign up for classes or programs that were offered on other units. Also, if we had a special skill for some work needed on another unit. That guy from John Howard called me today and he knew alot - you should call him 312-795-9454

Jane, Thanks for checking! I have a friend that is a Kane county Board Member and referred me to a IL senator that is helping. Steve does have to go to schooling because his test score was 5.8 and he needed a 6.0. He also signed up to get a job. He told me to tell you hi and his picture was taken after no shower for a week from Statesville. How is Doug

That's funny that Steven is worried about how his mug shot looked- That made me laugh out loud!! Tell him I had a few of those after shower shots myself!
Doug sounds great Natalie, better than i've ever heard him _ ALIVE and very sweet like we know he is.
He sounds like he's had a life changing experience and that is terrible what they did to him but he lived through it and maybe that's what he needed. I love him so much and I just want him to have a happy life.
Now I'm  battling with the parole plans, he can't come to Texas because the Field Services rep on his unit is new and "Doesn't know how to do it".  wc35 so then they tell me if he has to go to halfway house that he will have to go to Southern Illinois to a homeless shelter where he knows absolutly no one and there is not a transit system. I finally got ahold of the Home placement folks in Chicago and he said today not to worry, that he is going to find him a rehab/halfway house to go in the Chicago area until he can transfer down here. these people make me nervous - everyone tells you something different
I hope ya'll have a great visit this weekend- tell Diane and Steven Hi for me and I did send him letter and Doug is going to write him as well.

My Man was just moved to Vandalia.  I am  wondering if there is anyone that can give me updated information about the conditions there.  Both in general and as specific as you are aware.  I'm glad that he was moved from Graham R&C but sure wish it was closer!  Do you know anything about drug/alochol classes?  Thanks,

There is a drug program there, my guy's brother is nearing completion of it. Yeah, my guy and his brother are in the same facility...even get out 3 days apart.  What are your specific questions as far as the conditions go? It's prison, not day camp as my guy says, but as far as prisons go, it could be much worse. The facility is set up dorm style, with 100+ men in each building. When they leave the dorms, they walk in formation like the military. I always thought this was weird, but they have lil tunnels so if it's raining they don't get all wet. Speaking of rain, if it rains AT ALL, they lose yard for 5 days. Ok...so I could go on and on. My guy has been there over a year. If you have other questions, post them here or pm me if you want.

My husband has been there for about 30 days, and i have yet to go see him. He tells me that I need two photo ids, is this true? I have read some of the other posts, but none of them say 2. I just need to clarify before I go. I am planning to go on our birthday next month. Also according to mapquest i should take 51 once i get off the express way. Is that the best way? I read that 70 or 71 I cant remember now is easier for people visiting. If anyone can help me i would appreciate it. One other small question.. what is the chance that he would get released early for overcrowding? He is only there until September supposedly, but it sucks and would like him home  wc1

As far as what id's are needed, I'd give the facility a call. When I first started visiting they accepted DL and SS card, but I've heard/read they aren't accepting SS cards anymore for privacy reasons, so since the rules are always changing, I'd give them a call. After the initial visit, you just need 1 photo id. The early release question..while I suppose anything could happen, I don't suspect them to start releasing people in the next 3 months for overcrowding. He has good time he's eligible for, along with any other programs they offer at Vandalia that he might be able to take part in that would give him more credit. Don't worry though, 3 months will fly by!

I have been to Vandalia 5 times in the past six months.  I only needed a drivers licence.  You can only bring in three things: Your ID, one ignition key to your car, and a vending machine card which you purchase there.  I never needed a social security card.  I was so nervous the first time, but it was a breeze.  They will take you in a room, ask you to empty your pockets and pat you down, then tell you to go in.  It is easy.  Have a great time and get there early so you can take advantage of the full five hours.

I went on our birthday and anniversary ( all three on the same day) The gps was good except for it telling me to u-turn. I didnt know there was a dress code so my sister in law had to go to walmart off the next exit to get a normal t shirt no tank tops. We went on a saturday and it wasnt so bad.  The three hours flew by. I definitely want to go back, the drive down sucks. 4 hours is a long time to be in the car. But it is well worth it! I can't believe how much he has changed since I seen him in Dupage.

It looks like my LO will be placed at Vandalia - thats what VINE told me. Anyone give me info about it? And what have been the recent time lengths to get phone and visitation lists approved? Also - we have a 13 month old daughter - can i bring her stroller so she can nap? Milk? Juice? Favorite blanket? Right now - I'm just anxious about any info I can learn. Thanks much!

Most prisons only allow you to bring in a clean diaper, a bottle and wipes and maybe a blanket. No stroller or carriers are allowed.  You need to call the prison and ask what exactly you can bring in, some prisons make you change the diaper before you go in also.

Once the guys get to their parent prison, they have to go through orientation for 2 days and then fill out their visiting and phone lists, which can take up to two weeks to get approved. Once these are approved he will be able to call you. Please call his counselor if you have specific questions about things, they normally are very willing to answer you.

Forevermah - THANK YOU!
I'm very hesitant to contact a counselor because 1: I don't know who it is and 2: the posts that I've read seem to indicate that contacting the prison only creates problems for our LO.

Can I keep things in a locker before going into the visiting area? Cell phone? I'm going to get dropped off and then picked up - any issues with this?

You are welcome!

I called my sons counselor and he never had any problems, but I only did it when he first got there, writing down all the questions I had and they were very nice and helped me very much.   If you overdo it and become a pest, then yes, it could cause problems.

Cell phones are not allowed in the prison at all. You will have to keep that in your car before you go in. Your keys, money for a vending machine card and money to put on the card is about the only you should bring in.  Also, I think if you go back to the first page of this topic, WAID has a detailed post about visiting and costs of lockers, etc.  Read this whole topic and you'll pick up little things from different posts.

Does anyone know if Vandalia Work Camp visitation hours and location are the same as Vandalia Correctional Center? My LO has been moved to the work camp.

Just got a call from my son.  He said that the Hill (main campus) is closing down.  Most of the dorms are empty - just A, B, K (drug dorm) and maybe one more are housing inmates.  Supposedly there are no movements out of the hill and what's being said is nothing is going on.  It's anyone's guess as to what the real story is. Mostly just a lot of rumors.  My son was moved to the work camp three weeks ago.  He said no one is coming into there anymore. He just received approval for work release but was told that he could leave anytime between last week and up to six months.

I heard that they are closing Vandalia down and right now they only have 2 dorms open and they are being used to hold inmates like stateville, for reception because all the other joints are too over crowded and they have no where to hold people, especially since they put all good time on freeze. Is this true? My LO was transfered from Stateville to Vandalia TODAY and i am wondering if i should send him money or wait it its just holding because i dont want to send it and then he gets moved and it takes 2 weeks to follow him. ALSO, i heard that they have changed that rules and inmates are not allowed to make any phone calls from their parent institution for 30 days. IS THIS TRUE!?!? I know they have to wait until their phone list is approved, but did it change to 30 days? I really need to figure out whats going on. Someone please help me!

I dont know about all thes rumors indicating that vandalia is closing down.  My man was there last year from 1-2009 til 7-2009.  It is a great place to be if you can imagine that.  It is minimum security and they get gym as much as 2 hours a day.  When he arrived there he called me within 2 days.  I am not sure if that is standard but I was thrilled.  Hang in there, set up your phone service because no matter where he goes it will work.  I would send like twenty dollors, that will get him through until you speak to him.  Good Luck!  And visits last like 4 to 5 hours which is great!  You can hug him and hold his hand.  It helps him to go see him.

Toys normally are not allowed in, most prisons have some in visiting rooms if you are lucky!

My lo should be transferring to Vandalia most likely in the morning. I was looking for some information on this place. WAID had a great detailed description of it on this email chain back in November of 2007. I'm just wondering if things are the same or if some things have changed. If there is someone that has a lo there, I would appreciate any type of feedback. Is it still as kid friendly as it was when WAID described it with all the toys and fun stuff to keep the kids occupied? Or has it changed? Are the visitors restrooms still located in the visiting area? Any info would be great! Thanks in advance...

When they get to their parent facility, they will submit visitor and phone lists. It can take anywhere from days to weeks for them to be approved. When he calls for the first time, you will receive a message telling you to set up service with Consolidated.

Here is the link to our board on how to do that:

When an inmate is transferred from one parent facility (after being there for 2 years) to another facility (because he is about a year from release), do they have a wait on the visitor list and phone list being approved?  Or does it just go with him from the other prison to the next?

Bobsgirl his list should be already approved (gone with him) and once goes through orientation at this new prison, he should be able to call and have visitors without delay.

I have heard the same thing Bob's girl NO TV's or FANS in vandalia, I understand there is no room, and they are in an 80 bed dorm room.

Wasn't your guy in T'ville.
Do you mind if I ask why he is being transferred?

I know my l/o is at the farm now awaiting transfer to work release and because they are in dorms, they have no room for t.v or fans, he also said they were adding more beds to the dorm he was in and adding beds to the basement due to the overcrowding.

You can send as much money as you want, but if sending money orders, they can only be a max of $50 per money order. You can send as much as you want via western union or jpay.

patrickchicago, my lo was in Vandalia, it is a minimum sec facility, so its all dorms, he said anywhere from 80-100 men per dorm. NO air conditioning. My lo said the co's run it more like a military, then a min sec facility. Of course the food sucks. If you have any more questions feel free to pm me.

If there is no one to pick him up on the day of his release, they will take him to the nearest bus/train depot and get him a ticket.

my dad is there and we go and see him about twice a month since its four hours away from rockford il. They treat the inmates as if they were in like a military but other then that my dad said its pretty decent they live in a dorm room setting and its good if they want to work because it has an awsome work camp and very good programs

Thanks!  ././/

Some of you have asked about the conditions for inmates. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that some Black inmates (including my L/O) have been called Boy and other inappropriate comments. I have also heard a C.O. curse at an inmate for about 2 minutes straight while I was on the telephone with my L/O.  I will say that this is probably not the norm, not all of the C.O.'s are like this. It does happen on occasion.

I have not had any problems when I visited him. He is now at Vandalia Work Camp and it seems to be a little more relaxed and the C.O.'s don't seem to be as confrontational or disrespectful as some were "up the hill" at Vandalia.

I visit my boyfriend with our 8 month old son every weekend at Vandalia. I live in Aurora so its about a 4 hour drive. I obviously LOVE visiting him and the people there are really nice! The inmates can not go to the vending machines with you any more though, someone messed that up for every one! When they search the babies they just make you take off their diaper and hat if they are wearing a hat. You get a 3 hour visit on the weekend and I think its 4 or 5 hours on the weekday. I usually go on the weekend so I don’t remember if its 4 or 5. Im pretty sure its 5 hours. The visiting room is NEVER full there. I have always gotten the full visit! We hold hands the whole time ,and he can also hold our son as much as he wants. Its really nice. Its easy to sneak more kisses in too when the guards arent looking  let me know if you have any other questions, im a pro at the visiting directions now…sad to say but its true!

I was wondering if they allow you to take strollers into the visiting rooms at vandalia...I ask this because my daughter is 2 years old and blind and cant walk yet and would have a hard time sitting in my lap the whole time or sitting in the chairs we have to sit in...Any other info you could give me would be greatly appreciated also, Tony just got sent to Vandalia today!

Call the prison and ask, as this is a special request, explain the situation and see what they say.  You can find the # for Vandalia  on our prison profile board, this board in fact, first post:

Called Vandalia! They said I could not bring in Lilahs stroller but they have high chairs she could sit in there so that is just as good... They told me they get 5 visits per month too... And you can have underwire on your bra... When I got on the phone with them they were very nice and explained things well... I appreciate this because when he was at graham and I called they talked to me like dirt... oh yeah and they said that it usually takes them between a few days and a few weeks for their visitors list and phone lists to be passed

From the older posts, it looks like Vandalia is not as good as Taylorville. I wonder if they still have flooding in the basement and the guards treat them terrible. Can they Buy TV and radio and such? Anyone have a commissary list? Will appreciate any updated info.

Jna-

My l/o is back at Vandalia, and happens to be in one of the basements. With all of the recent storms and rain, it has been seriously flooding. They are not able to have electronics other than a walkman. The commissary list is quite extensive and offers a variety of products. In my experience if you need anything special or extended visits, you will have more success with the female asst. warden. Good luck to you and your l/o and may we have them back home just as soon as possible.

I just left Vandaila after a 10 month stay. I must say that the conditions at that facility are sub standard compared to other facilities in Illinois.

First, the medical care there is as if you are getting no treatment at all, the inmate must submit a sick call request, the nurses screen you prior to a visit with the doctor. (Cleveland Rayford) If the nurse feels that you do not need to see the doctor, the inmate is SOL. If an inmate is lucky to be allowed to see the doctor, the doctor himself is a joke.... I base my opinion on his treatment of me. I submitted to him my medical records from my private doctor, along with x-ray reports from both Loyola, and MacNeal Hospitals. Rayford did not even look at them. He just asked me what was wrong with me, and what I wanted him to do. It took me 3 visits to him to get him to look at my medical records (after I filed a grievance). He still did nothing but continue the naprosyn (for severe pain in my hip and leg) (I need a total hip replacement).

Second, The guards treat the inmates like crap. I have seen maybe 4 guards that treated inmates with a little respect. The others well lets just say they thought we were all slaves. They swore at all inmates, ordered us around, and tried to get us to talk back to them. They would walk a person to SEG just for saying what was on your mind. If you asked to speak to a Lieutenant, ya go to SEG.

Third, The only electronics an inmate can have is a walkman, which is ordered from the commissary for the low price of around $50. Oh, an inmate can only have 2 batteries in their possession, and can only order batteries on commissary day, and they have to turn in the old batteries to get the new ones. When I left commissary was every two weeks. I hope they changed that back to every week.

Fourth, When I left they were still housing inmates in the basements, due to overcrowed conditions. Vandalia is housing 1845 inmates and was built to house around 900 inmates. There are 88 bunks in each Dorm not including the basements.

When an inmate is paroled they either are driven to Effingham to take the train to Chicago. Or taken to the Bus in Vandalia, to be taken to St. Louis where they make the connection to their destination to other areas.  If an inmate has money on the books they will pay for the ticket. If they dint then the state pays for it. Oh, and they will get a whole $10 as gate money, if they have no money on the books.

I hope this info helps out...

I have filed a Civil Rights Complaint in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Illinois, complaining of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) violations, in addition to the medical treatment, and overcrowding conditions. I'm in the process of amending the complaint now. The Judge has ordered the case filed. Summons' to be served soon.
If anyone is interested the case number is 11-168-JPG.

This is absolute bullshit! My fiancée was sent there may 6th and he absolutely hates it there... The visits are just about the only thing good about Vandalia from what Tony says... I mean how can they classify Vandalia as a minimum prison when they treat it like a medium to medium max prison... and about the population... How does it say that they can house 1700 people on the IDOC page when a few months ago it said it could only house 900 people... there is something fishy there... I hate this shit my man isnt a bad guy and he didnt break no major laws all he did was drive a car while his licence was revoked big woop

If you look at the Quarterly Report (the link is on the IDOC site) it will show that the lower figure is the Design Capacity and the larger figure is the Operational Capacity.  There are a lot of statistics in that report if that kind of stuff is interesting to you.  It is to me.  It's an eye-opener really.

I did just notice that in comparing the October 2010 with the January 2011 report they did increase the Operational Capacity for some of the facilities. Unless they are building additions, I don't see how those numbers are flexible. I guess anywhere they can find to squeeze another body in somewhere.....  :-(

Dreamweaver...I'm soo sorry that you had to go thru crap like that..Glad you are back home.

IDOC is utterly ridiculous anymore..i have honestly talk to so many people on IPT and off IPT who have loved ones currently in IDOC and some have been released previously..and the ones are inside, are going thru more hell then what they ever went thru when they were out and having problems..and the ones who are out actually swear they are not ever returning to "hell" (as they called it)..

Good luck to you and again, glad you are back home..

love and hugs

Hello All,
I think I can explain the increase in the operational capacity from Oct 2010 - Jan 2011, This seems to be the time period that Pat Quinn suspended the MGT Good Time. IDOC is not giving it yet, (as of when I left on March 23rd) so this means that all prisoners will be serving the 6 months they should have been given.

It is my understanding that there are still several hundred inmates at the Cook County Jail still waiting to go to IDOC to start their sentence. Yes the time counts against the sentence, but they are much more limited in their movement, and privileges. They are so overcrowded that they are using some gym areas for housing inmates, and have set up cots in them.

Furthermore, The Joliet Receiving Center (NRC) for IDOC is as well overcrowded, they have been placing the inmates on cots in some of the sections that were designated for other purposes. Also, NRC has refused to accept inmates from Cook County, and have sent several busses back to the county.

Something has to be done about the overcrowding conditions, perhaps our legislators can come up with other sentencing programs, such as community service as an alternate to prison for non violent offenders, or the such.  All I know is that it is a law that IDOC must accept and house sentenced prisoners. Perhaps the Sheriff's of the counties should get together and file a legal action against IDOC, to force them to accept the sentenced inmates.. Which in turn would force IDOC to make some changes about Good Time, and their release protocols. Yes, I do understand some people belong in prison, but not the non violent offenders, such as driving on a suspended/revoked license. Which was my crime, I dont think I should have been sent away for 10 months for that.   Vandalia IS HELL, I wont be going back......

Welcome to IPT.

You can send letters to him at Vandalia, using his name ID# and the address of the facility.

If he hasn't already put you on his phone list, he must first do that, giving them all your information and once that is approved he will be able to call you.

You can go to our phone board here on IPT and read on how to set up a Consolidated Phone account, they are the only company you can use for calls from an inmate in IDOC, here is the link to that board:

Call the facility and ask, plan to feed the baby before the visit, there is a bathroom but I wouldn't breastfeed in there.

Oh wow! Got a letter from my l/o in Vandalia and I am absolutely horrified by how they are treated while there! In his letters he never mentioned what it was like in there so I asked him to tell me in his next letter and I can not believe we would allow them to live in such conditions and be treated the way they are! Hey I know they broke the law... But to not even have proper clothing (his boots have no insoles and the soles are coming off... His feet are blistered and hurt like hell... His pants are so holey he needs a pair of sweats to wear under them... His jacket has no insulation) only 8 toilets to 100 men? Inmates in the basement inmates in the gyms c/os that yell and degrade and act like they are trying to push you to mess up... He says he feels like a P.O.W. And that it is messing with his head... And spiders bite the inmates often... Like I said... I understand that they did something to get themselves in there and they are being punished but at what point does it become cruel and unusual?

There is no train directly to Vandalia. You could either ride a train to Chicago then there is a bus that takes people from Chicago to Vandalia, but I am sorry I do not no the name of that company, but they do charge $60.00. Other option is to ride a train to St. Louis which is only about 45min to an hour away from Vandalia and you could then rent a car which would only cost 25.00-30.00 a day plus whatever gas you use. Good luck on your visit I hope is goes GREAT! I also live out of state so I have looked into all the ways I could get to Vandalia. :)
