My husband commented on Stateville speaks to me on a visit the other day. He really likes it, and appreciates the subscription. He said "it's nice to see soething positive circulating around such a negative place"! So I recommend that everyone get their man a subscription, it's just mail that automatically gets sent, nothing you have to do.

I would suggest, if you can afford it, to include $10 in your request for subscriptions. Funding for each issue is usually a problem...although free for inmates, if the inmate (or the outmate) can afford it, Bill Ryan would appreciate the $$. |

I couldn't pull it up Scout. Is Bill taking submissions of poetry from inmates currently?
Poetry and other articles from inmates are welcome. I encourage everyone to read the July Special Issue on medical care. If anyone knows a prisoner who has medical issuse should contact Ted Pearson at the address in this issue of Stateville Speaks |

The September issue of Stateville Speaks has been posted....thanks to Mah for doing this quickly. http://www.illinoisprisontalk.org/index.php/topic,2767.0.htmlIn this issue there is an announcement from Bill Ryan that effective with the next issue he will be resigning as publisher. Cynthia Kobel will resume this position with the January issue. Cynthia has been involved in prison reform/activism for many years and currently heads the Tamms Committee. Although he'll be missed, Bill is making this move to devote more time to working on legislative issues pertaining to our inmates, and more importantly to spend time with his kids and many grandkids. Bill, thank you for your tireless and never-ending efforts to help our loved ones. ./.// |

I need to email him and find out what ever happened with the winner of an essay contest about the war in Iraq that the guys could enter. My Jo did a beautiful poem/essay and I was kinda hoping maybe he'd win.

Jo's poem was excellent and very powerful. Winners are to be announced in January hopefully |

Well, Bill, I can certainly understand why you've decided to give up SS. Your input will be sorely missed, BUT, I'm very excited that you'll be able to devote even more time to legislative issues. For those who don't know, Bill can be a one-man force in Springfield! He digs in his heels and doesn't give up.

Not sure how long this will last but probalby a long time as i will have a very hard time moving away from SS. I am so glad cynthia and jason her assistant are gong to be publislers. this will be great boost to all of us. We will need lots and lots of supporter from the IPTers to get legislation passed but i do think we will have a good shot if we can get people motivated and willing to work in contacting legislators and attending hearings. there will be a special editon of SS in dec to provide more detail about legislation and how to provide support. I will be visiting grandkids and family outof state more and spending time with those in state watching their activities. |

This saves a lot of time and effort mailing back and forth. Thanks. For those who don't know Bill. He persisted and despite getting refused he brought about the Idoc allowing inmates to work on things like Statesville Speaks. Idoc gave every excuse under the sun to not allow the inmates to produce this newsletter but Bill persisted and achieved this. It was a massive achievement. Well done Bill. Enjoy your children and family! |

When you hit the Jan. issue, March comes up. Was there a Jan. issue? Looking for info on that 1 prisoner/1 vote thing. If no one knows for sure, I can email Bill directly to get Jan copy.

 ALL I can say is WOW!!!!!!! Bill Ryan's speech on House Bil 4154 is incredible. What a great speaker and educated man. The fact that he does so much for all the incarcerated men and women, in trying to get the legislature to understand that DOC needs reformed is astounding. I am very impressed. GOOD Job Bill!!! Keep up the good work!!
