You're right Jims, but it depends on what he said too. If it was in print and people from there, because of that, would call, write and email the IDOC, then THAT would probably get results!

Often times just an inquiring phone call from a reporter about a sticky situation is enough to get people to make a move to correct a wrong that would make many look bad....or criminal...there have been too many inmates that have died this past year because of poor medical treatment and there have been lawsuits filed by families...it would seem to me that the IDOC would give gravely ill inmates the emergency care they need rather than fend off any more lawsuits.
I don't know what will move them to do the right thing for Montell. All we can do is keep plugging away for whatever attention we might gain....from any source. Maybe the DOC has finally realized that Montell's care is out of the scope their medical personnel are capable of providing.
Maybe we'll never know what is working....but we need to continue our efforts and find new ways to garner attention for Montell. There must be a local paper in the Dixon area that could be contacted. If anyone wishes to call a newspaper I suggest you ask to speak with the assignment editor and then make a plea for someone to pick up the story....
For now Montell is safe at the UIC hospital. They have excellent staff and I'm anxious to hear an update from his mother...hopefully his sores will be treated and he'll be kept comfortable. She must be exhausted from fighting this battle for her son. Hopefully she's been able to be at his side since he arrived on Saturday. There is nothing more comforting than a mother's love...

SMD: I did contact Sauk Valley News and was in turn contacted by a reporter who wanted Mrs. Johnson's phone number. I forwarded the email to Ted Pearson and he in turn contacted Mrs. Johnson. I don't know what happened to the story beyond that point.
God's Blessings to You! Momm

We have contacted all the radio, tv and newspapers, several times, starting in April of this year. Many times in fact and only a few days ago.Nothing seems to come of any of it, despite what contact the reporters etc seem to have.
We have had 2 news conferences. I am convinced that no-one wants to touch this because it is too big a can of worms. However, having said that, it never hurts to keep trying! So please do whatever you feel you can do for them.I know it is so appreciated. ././/

Sadly, Montell was taken back to Dixon CC today by the IDOC. There are no details available yet. We are waiting for an update from his mother when she gets some answers. This is appalling...

Can someone please email me at Lissa@illinoisprisontalk.com the complete story on Montell or contact information including the blog for his mom. We have a paper here that likes to create havoc and I know this first hand because they endorsed me for my county seat and said the other guy was involved in some sort of fiasco so they do this story. Thoughts are with all of Montell's family and other inmates who arent getting the proper care including mine with his bronchotis.

From Gloria's blog posting Nov 7th: Wednesday, November 7, 2007 MONTELL RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL AND TAKEN BACK TO PRISON 11/7/07– Today when I arrived at the hospital Dametra was with him. The rumor I heard yesterday became a reality today. Yes, Montell was going to be taken back to Dixon Correctional Center sometime today. I talked with Dr. Amissi Patel and she stated that Montell was too weak to have any more surgeries and that they were releasing him. I told her that with the feeding tube in him they were just setting him up to die. He wouldn’t have been in this condition in the first place if they had taken care of him. I spent most of the day trying to contact people to have them stop this move back to Dixon. Montell just laid in my arms and held my hand. He wanted to do the ABCs and we did. I stayed until the ambulance people came to get him and helped dress him for the trip back to Dixon. I left before they did because I couldn’t take seeing them take him back there and I didn’t want him to see the tears streaming down my face. Lord please help us. http://www.montelljohnson.blogspot.com/

This doesn't suprise me very much. If Montell's condition has deteriated to the point of no return, no hospital is going to keep him there. His best bet is to go to some sort of hospice. IDOC is not going to pay the hospital bill just to keep him comfy. Now don't get all upset at me. I don't like it either. I just wish IDOC would take better care of those in their custody.

Montell's mom's blog breaks my heart. :-[ I have been praying and thinking of them every day.
There is a thought that has been in my head, and please, no one blast me for saying this........but, if it were my son, I think, (and I am saying , I think, not that I know because I haven't walked in those shoes) that if he were my son, I would have just been praying for God to take him out of his misery and let him go, and go home to God in paradise.........this is a living Hell that no one deserves. :-[
And, I hope the people that are responsible for this mess have to pay dearly, and I know that somehow, someway, they will.

I know what happened to my daughter when she was tube fed too high a calorie intake when she had viral encephalitis. It's not good. Something like that has to be monitored ever so closely. I emailed Ted Pearson with the information this morning. I'm praying somebody will let Mrs. Johnson-Estes feed her son like she was doing before when he was gaining strength. This is so sad...a slow, torturous death. I'm praying for somebody to stop this!

Blog Posting as of:
Thursday, November 8, 2007 MY VISIT WITH MONTELL TODAH
11/8/07 – This morning at 8:01 a.m. I called Warden Chandler’s office and Lori answered the phone I told her that I would be coming down there to see Montell at 1 p.m. today. She told me that I needed a clearance, I told her that Warden Chandler had told me I could come two days during the week and one day on the weekend. She told me she had to check and asked me to hold the line. When she came back on the line she told me that the Warden was on her way in and ask me to hold. When Warden Chandler got on the phone she told me that I just couldn’t call and give her a two-hour notice. I told her that I was making a courtesy call to let her know that I would be in today. I also reminded her of the visitation schedule that she had previously given me. She then stated that I knew that I was coming yesterday because I had called Springfield about the possible move of Montell and had told them that I didn’t want him to go back there to die, which I had. She then stated that she needed to be notified of my visits 24 hours before I came. I also let her know that I would be there this coming Sunday also.
I told her that this had been a rumor for two days however, I’m not known to act on rumors. The hospital staff told me that Montell was being discharged sometime that day when I tried to get them to notify the American Red Cross in order for Leon to be able to come home and be with Montell. This is when I called Springfield to find out if someone could intercede with Montell being transported back to Dixon. The doctor told me that Montell was too weak for any more surgeries at this time and would be returning back to Dixon. I was told that Dixon had been calling about returning him since Monday. He did have the surgery until Tuesday afternoon and I understand they were planning on returning him then.
I arrived at Dixon’s facility at 1 p.m. When I arrived at the Infirmary at 1:20 p.m. I saw Montell lying in the bed on his right side listening to the radio. I noticed that he didn’t have any IV or antibiotics going into his body. Montell’s medical reports states that this should be a long-term procedure. The officer assigned to that floor came in and turned his radio off. Montell let me know that he wanted to hear some more music so I turned it by on. I asked him if he had eaten anything today and he nodded “yes”. I constantly tell him he has to eat to get muscles for me since he tells me I’m his strength.
While sitting besides his bed I noticed that he was having spasms in his upper and lower body. Usually they’re in his legs. Montell wanted to be turnover so I stepped out the room so the nurse and inmate could turn and clean him. After they finished I went back into the room and Montell drifted off to sleep for about fifteen minutes. He then woke up and looked for me. I held his right hand which was unusually warm and assured him that I would never leave him without letting him know. Montell wanted me to say the ABCs and had me repeat them three times and I noticed that he had drifted off to sleep again. He woke up again and told me he wanted a television. I had to leave him at 2:50 p.m. but I told him that I would be back on Sunday and that if he closed his eyes he could see me at all times. I kissed him and walked back to the main gate with the officer.

Is anyone else outraged by this? Everyday I awake to read more sh*t the IDOC is pulling with Montell. What the hell is their problem? Are they trying to rush the end of his life? So they don't have to be bothered with him any longer? What's the warden's problem? What a cold, unsympathetic woman she must be. I hope Montell's family sues the pants off the IDOC and Wexford for the horrid medical care he is receiving. Where's the IV and the antibiotics....any absolute idiot knows that antibiotics require extended administration to be effective....ten days minimum....and for a man that weighs 86 pounds he should be receiving intravenous fluids just to sustain his life. It just infuriates me. Especially when about six State offices come here to read about Montell's suffering everyday and nothing is done to end this miserable situation.
Apparently Warden Chandler can't even follow her own schedule for visitation for Gloria. Why do they need advance warning of her visits? So they can clean him up and cover up for whatever mistreatment he suffers when she isn't around? So they can have guards on duty to keep an eye on her when she's visiting her dying son? Is the state too cheap to allow Montell to remain hospitalized until his health either improves or he passes on in dignity and comfort? When this is all over I hope all those involved are whining and crying about having their *sses dragged into court to explain their unbelievable actions. Montell could have led a much better life, even with his MS, if he'd have received proper evaluation, treatment and daily care from the beginning of his diagnosis.
And explain this DOC.....if this is how you maintain the health of one of your sickest inmates....how on earth are you caring for other ill inmates?
Who the hell is running the Department of Corrections? Where is Roger Walker and Guy Pierce in all of this? And ultimately, Blagojevich is responsible....he hired these unbelievably inept people....I am absolutely outraged....I can't wait for the Department of Justice to hear about this one....I hope they stick it to all of them....

And furthermore...how do they justify TWELVE scars on his wrists from being handcuffed to a hospital bed? He's paralyzed...how much of a threat could he possibly be when he can't raise his own arms? It's sickening.....
