Sorry, I was unable to get a copy of Terry Hoyt's letter until now. Mrs. Hoyt is the mother of the woman that Montell Johnson supposedly murdered. She wrote the letter to IDOC Director Roger Walker and it will also be included with the above letters to the governor.
Mrs. Hoyt maintains that Montell had nothing to do with this murder. Her arguments are compelling and shocking. She is seeking justice for her daughter by having Montell released after all these years:
Dear Mr. Walker;
I am the mother of Dorianne Warnsley, brutally murdered and found in a cornfield in Macon County on July 18th, 1994. I have met you personally, on several occasions, with Jack Coventry, my brother-in-law.
As I am sure that you are well aware, I have always protested the conviction of Montell Johnson; mainly because I know that Carlos Stokes wrote and signed 4 confessions. Montell never had a reason to murder my daughter, as they were friends; prior to her murder, she had spent 2 wks. in Chicago with him at his mother's home. On the other hand, Carlos Stokes and Sandra Dye had great motive for wanting Dorianne dead; she couldn't tell about their involvement in an armed home invasion, which took place in Home Park, Decatur. You can check your records, but I know that Dorianne, Sandra and Carlos were involved in that crime, with Sandra being the instigator, as it was the home of her children's grandmother. I learned that Sandra wanted them to go there to get money and cocaine, and Carlos beat the woman (Kathy) with a gun. He was going to kill her, at Sandra's insistence, as Kathy could identify her, but a mailman came up and they ran. Those Armed Home Invasion charges were dropped against Carlos and Sandra in exchange for their testimony against Montell....which, in my opinion, was ridiculous!! Especially in light of the fact that Sandra and Carlos were on the run (from the time of Dorianne's murder) and missing for over 3 years!!! I fought like hell with the State's Attorney's office for warrants for several years, and Mr. Holsapple, the Macon County Sheriff at the time, can attest to that! I finally went on TV, at the urging of WAND, to let people know; ONLY THEN was a warrant issued for Carlos Stokes. When he was arrested, Sheriff Holsapple held a press conference and told everyone "this could have never happened without the persistence of Terry Hoyt". Sandra was arrested in Michigan 10 days later, living under an alias and on probation! That alone shocked me, as I had been assured by an FBI agent, that if she were arrested for anything, she would get caught as she was on probation in Macon County.
Sandra Dye was released without ANY charges, including prior charges being dismissed!!! She was at the scene of the murder of Dorianne, told Carlos to shoot her, and disappeared for over 3 yrs.!!! She said she was 'deathly afraid' of Montell, but wrote to him and sent him nude pictures of herself....is that deathly afraid?!
Carlos Stokes was given a 15 yr. Plea Bargain, to which I had adamantly objected to in Jack Ahola's office, when he read Carlos's confessions to me!! I told Jack Ahola, (with witness Stacey Spence present, she was then head of the Victims Witness Program) that I would in no way, under any circumstances agree to a 15 yr. Plea Bargain, that I, in fact, would take my chances with a jury. The State's Attorney and Judge Jerry Patton, went behind my back, violating my Victim's Rights, and gave Carlos the Plea Bargain the afternoon before his trial was to start!!
Then we finally get to Montell's 'mockery of a trial', in which he defended himself. During that trial, many lies were told by Sandra Dye and Carlos Stokes, but also Jack Ahola lied to the judge and the jury. I have a picture of Dorianne taken at the crime scene, showing an injury to her chest caused by a screwdriver, which Carlos caused after shooting her 3 times, and beating her about her head with a hammer, then stabbing her with the screwdriver. Montell questioned Carlos about this and Jack Ahola objected, stating to the Judge and the jury, that "the was NO such injury and NO such picture". As I said, I have that picture, which I enlarged and sent to then-Gov. Ryan, in my successful fight to get Montell off of Death Row. In my opinion, and I said at that time, Montell should have not had to serve any more time, period. HE did not murder my daughter.
I beg of you, PLEASE release Montell to his mother, to go home and die in whatever peace he can!! PLEASE give me some justice, after all of these years, and hear my plea!
Thank you for your time,
Very Sincerely,
Terry Hoyt (Mother of Dorianne Warnsley)[/i]
