Visting

Upon your arrival at Kankakee Minimum Security Unit look for the C/O in a van.  They will direct you.  Generally they have you park for a vehicle shakedown.  Because KMSU is a small facility, they only allow 1 visitor group to enter for sign in at a time.  The most time I have been held in the parking lot is 10-15 minutes.

Bring your ID's for the first visit.  One picture ID for subsequent visits.  The vending card costs $5.00.  I am not aware of limits.  I generally put $20 on at a time.

The staff is most cordial.

We got "busted" for holding hands.  Apparently an inmate got caught holding something else in November.  So, hugs & kisses at hello & goodbye are OK.  Otherwise, keep yer mitts off.

Hi Jewels:

No I didn't lose visiting.  The C/O was good about it.  She gave me the "I know you're just holding hands, but some other people take it too far."  This happened fairly early on in K's stay.  One of many small things taken away that stun me about incarceration.

Another one of those IDOC inconsistencies in the rules.  I never understood why at some facilites hand holding is allowed, and at others, it isn't.  What is the harm in hand holding? My guy is at a level 2 facility, and hand holding is allowed, but at a minimum security prison, it isn't allowed?  Go figure... ^%$#

w8, it's not so much the levels, it's the rules of the facility, the wardens rules of that facility.  The rules at some of the minimums/high minimums were more strict then Menard, until recently. Go figure!

Thanks Mah for that explanation. It's an effort in futuility trying to figure some of these rules out. It's nice to have a place like IPT where we can share information about the different facilities. I just think it is ridiculous to not allow couples to hold hands.  (>(

No hand holding, NO touching after the intial hug and kiss at Stateville. J always says he looks forward to his hug and kiss at the beginning of our visit and  dreads the one at the finish of the visit because he knows he cannot touch again until the next time. They miss touch and it is so much a part of the human experience, being able to touch and feel another's skin.

Update on the vending cards at Kankakee.  I was visiting K today and asked the C/O about the maximum amount allowed on the card and he told me the max is $25.00.

Yes, Mah posted the links above for you.  Kankakee is Dwight's minimum security women's prison in Kankakee, Ill.  It's a very small, relaxed prison.  I think it only holds a few hundred women.  It's a good place to get into, if you have to be in prison.  I know someone who was sentenced there and she said the place was very cool....

Hey Sept.  I tried to search for the facility address below, but can't get any of the search engines to show me a correct location.  Can you give directions to the facility from I-57 southbound out of chicago?

Thanks,

Facility Address:
37040 S. Ill. Route 102
Manteno, IL 60950[/b]
